Who is Florinda? – Blogger interview

As part of Book Blogger Appreciation Week, many book bloggers are participating in blogger interviews.  I was lucky enough to be paired with Florinda, the author of The 3R’s: Reading, ‘Riting, and Randomness.  Be sure to check it out!  It’s a beautiful blog about books and life in general.

After moving several times, Florinda has settled in Southern California.  She’s the Controller for a non-profit social services agency in Los Angeles.  She blogs because she works with numbers, but loves words.  She’s a wife, mother, step-mother and dog owner.  She was nice enough to take the time to answer a few questions for me.

How long have you been blogging?

A year and a half – my first post went up on March 16, 2007.  I have also been blogging as a contributor to the Los Angeles Moms Blog since earlier this summer.

Why did you start blogging?  Has it turned out the way you expected?

I started blogging to keep track of what I’d read, plain and simple.  I felt like I was forgetting too much about the books I was reading, and thought it would help to keep a record.  Since I spend most of my time at the computer, an online journal seemed the easy way to do it.

It has become so much more than I ever expected.  I blog about quite a few topics in addition to books, and I’ve learned a lot.  I’ve been able to develop my writing, and have found that I enjoy essays.  But the best, and most pleasant, surprise has been the people I’ve met via reading and commenting, and some real friendships have come from that.

Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite book?

This is my least favorite question – I can never narrow it down to just one, and I’m not about to try :-) !

What is your favorite genre of books?

I read a lot of contemporary fiction and memoirs.  A lot of the fiction I read is by women writers, but very little of it is romance or “chick lit.”

Have you always loved to read?  Do you have an early memory of reading?

Yes!  I was an early reader – before I started school, actually.  I remember that once I learned to read on my own, I didn’t like having books read to me any more.  I also remember reading “The Three Bears” to my kindergarten class; I think I was the only kid in the class who was reading already.

What are your other hobbies and interests?

Movies and TV-watching with my husband; music, and playing around with iTunes; traveling; dogs; cooking, but not when I HAVE to.

Are you on Library Thing, Good Reads, both, or neither?

Both.  My LT collection is here, and my GoodReads shelves are here; I use LT more regularly, though.

What is the best part of book blogging?

I can’t pick just one thing, but the book-blogging community itself is at the top of the list!  There are so many smart, thoughtful, and welcoming people here.  Finding out about new and new-to-me books is good, and getting books for free to review is definitely a nice perk :-)
