The Thin Place

August 2, 2008

The Thin Place by Kathryn Davis is set in the fictional town of Varennes, somewhere near the Canadian border. It’s full of characters; almost too many in my opinion, because it was hard to keep them apart at times. The story is told from different points of view (including some animal’s), and by other things besides narrative such as police blotters, old news articles, horoscopes, etc. The plot centers around three girls – Mees, Lorna and Sunny. Mees has the power to resurrect people and animals, which she does several times in the book. At the end of the book, most of the characters are in church for the Pentecost when two armed men come in – one of them is killed by a parishioner and the other murders one. When Mees brings the murderer back to life, her ability is transferred to him.

I found this book a little hard to follow. The plot is not well developed – there were far to many sub-plots and the characters are not well defined, so I never felt fully invested in the outcome. It is a short, fast read.
