6 Random Things: Books Edition

Wendi of Wendi’s Book Corner and Avis of She Reads and Reads tagged me for the 6 random/weird facts book edition. I don’t know why I always struggle with these things. Here are my random facts:
- When we lived in France, I would read anything I could get my hands on as long as it was in English. I had a couple American friends who read, and we would swap books, and there was one shop where I could sometimes find a book in English. The only book I could not finish when we were there was Interview With A Vampire by Ann Rice.
- I was a library nerd as a kid. There wasn’t a public library close to us until I was in junior high, so the wonderful librarian at my elementary school would open the library before and after school, and a few days a week in the summer. I hung around so much, she finally put me to work.
- One of my fondest childhood memories is of sitting at the kitchen table reading to my mother while she cooked dinner. She acted like she was fascinated with whatever book I was reading.
- I cannot read in the car – it makes me carsick. We’re going to try an audio book on our next trip.
- Vance learned how to read French before English. He taught himself to read English. Of course, we read to him a lot. (I know that’s not about me, but it’s still about books and reading.)
- I have to read for a little while before I go to bed, or I can’t sleep. It’s my wind down time.

We’re heading to Alabama to celebrate my dad’s 89th birthday – he was thrilled with everyone’s birthday wishes, by the way. I have a few posts scheduled and I’ll try to moderate comments from time to time, but I will not be on Google Reader this weekend. I’ll play catch-up next week. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Your memory of reading to your mom made me smile. My daughter reads to me when I’m in the shower. Yup, I have ZERO privacy! But this will soon pass and then I’ll miss it.

Your childhood memory warmed my heart. What a GREAT mom! Audiobooks are the best! And, I read before turning the light out, too. That wind down time is a must, even if it’s only 5 minutes.

My husband and I are going to visit Paris later this year. You didn’t say where in France you were at, but do you know of any good bookstores in Paris with English books?

It’s sweet that your Mom pretended to be interested while you were reading. Mine did the same thing. I think mothers have a huge impact on whether or not their children will be readers, don’t you?
Count me among those who have to read before going to sleep, too.

I have to read before bed, too. My husband does not get that. He says, “Just turn out the light and go to sleep.” It’s not like he hasn’t been watching me wind down with a book for eons.
I can’t wait to find out how the audio works out.

I also was a library nerd. I would go to the library at home and have tons have books. I never got to all of them. I remember when I was in HS, the craziest thing I did, before back packs. I would carry an armful of books from school that I took out from the library. I had to walk home about 2 miles. I kid you not, because the school buses would only pick up students that were 3 miles. I would walk home in the freezing cold in the snow, and windy too. with these armful of books.
Boy, I was not thinking, and I look back and know I was book crazy. Now, is that nuts!!!
What a cool memory of you and your mom! I can’t read to myself in the car, but I’ve found that I am OK if reading aloud. And hubby likes that, as long as it’s a book he’s interested in. Makes the tirp go faster. I can’t do audio books–mind wanders too much.
