Review: The Great Cow Race

Fone, Phoney and Smiley Bone are in the Valley and it’s time for the Spring Fair.  The highlight of the Spring Fair is The Great Cow Race, which Gran’ma Ben wins every year.  Phoney comes up with a scheme to win everyone’s money by spreading rumors about Gran’ma Ben.  Meanwhile, Fone is working to impress Thorn because she spent the first day of the fair with Tom.  While Fone is out writing a love poem, he encounters the great Rat Creatures who want to eat him.  When the race and the Rat Creatures come together, chaos ensues.

I’ve gotten hooked on the Bone series of graphic novels, thanks to Beth FishThe Great Cow Race by Jeff Smith is the second in the series.  The illustrations are great and there’s enough of a plot to keep children and adults interested.  I enjoyed this one as much as the first one, but you really do need to read the first one to fully appreciate this one.

My kids would love this. I think we have the first one around here somewhere.

I’ve never heard of this series. I’ll have to see if I can flip through one, when we’re in the Big City. Thanks!

These look so good. Would they be appropriate for Hayley?

I’m sooooo happy you’re enjoying the series. The humor is great and Fone Bone is just too cute.

I read my first graphic novel last year and loved it. I’ve been thinking about picking up more and this looks like a fun one to start with. Thanks!!

I have never even seen one of these novels but between you and Beth I am going to have to at least look at one. The plot sounds a little bizarre.

I’ve been thinking I should get interested in graphic novels, but The Watchmen is too intimidating to start with! I think I’ll have to check these out!
