Follow Me: Review, Blog Tour and Giveaway

April 27, 2009

When Sally Werner was 16, she had a baby boy by her cousin, Daniel.  Two days later, she left the baby on her parent’s kitchen table and ran.  This is a pattern Sally followed for years – she ran when someone from her old town recognized her, she ran when she found out she was pregnant, and she ran after an old boyfriend found her and assaulted her.

Sally finally settled into life in a small town and raised her daughter, Penelope,  on her own.   When Penelope’s father showed up, she decided to allow him into her daughter’s life.  He and his mother do their best to win Penelope over by buying her gifts.   Sally found a job at a law firm and was able to earn enough money to send some home to the son she abandoned years ago.  She also began an affair with one of the lawyer’s in the firm.  Feeling neglected, Penelope decided to move in with her father.  She came home to her mother’s after he became abusive.

When Penelope was in college, she fell in love and became pregnant.  She and her boyfriend, Abraham,  are devoted to each other and decided they would share a life together.  That is, until Sally tells Abraham a secret from her past that caused him to run away.

Follow Me by Joanna Scott is a wonderful character driven story.   At first, I was a little frustrated with Sally because her solution to every problem seemed to be to run away.  After I read this,

It was all so confusing.  She had always intended to live a righteous life.  In the midst of any decision, she’d always thought she was doing what was justified and necessary.  But how could she know, how did anyone know what the repercussions would be?

I realized that Sally is just like most people, doing the best they can in life.  This story really captivated me, and I found that I flew through the book (especially the second half) even though it’s over 400 pages long. If you love character driven novels or family stories, you will love this book.  Review copy provided by Hachette Books.

Joanna Scott has written 9 books and been nominated for major awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award.  She’s also received MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships.

I have an extra copy of this book to give away to one lucky reader.  To enter,  simply leave a comment on this post.  Contest is open to US and Canadian residents only (no PO Boxes, please).  I will use to determine the winner.  Contest ends at midnight EST, Wednesday, May 6, 2009.  Winners will be announced on Thursday, May 7, 2009.

Now you have me curious why Abraham runs away!? and I must admit, I’m also intrigued by the recognition of Joanna Scott and her name doesn’t ring any bells for me.

This sounds good. Kind of depressing, but good.

Fantastic review. I really appreciate how you said Sally is just like everyone else — doing the best she can!

    7. April 27, 2009 8:49 am

This was a great book, despite some sluggish parts. And you are right–Sally was just trying to do the best she could!

    8. April 27, 2009 8:58 am

Sally’s character is well-written, but she irritated me, especially as a role model. If that’s the best she could do, then she needed to find a new direction for her life, because her best isn’t good enough. I reviewed this book here:

I have this one on my list, and I’m really looking forward to it! I love that you “flew through it”…that’s incentive enough for me!

No need to enter me Kathy but I really liked the quote you used. I didn’t enjoy the novel as much as you did although I agree the second half moved much faster. It is true though that Sally was just an ordinary person getting through life; I think that’s what I felt made her character likeable despite things she did.

This sounds like a really interesting book and I would love to be entered!

*Hanging head in shame…..I really really didn’t like this book, I bailed on page 184. I just couldn’t take anymore stream of consciousness type description, it drove me batty!

At first I thought it was because I wasn’t feeling very good, but the next few books I read, I enjoyed a lot, so I guess its’ just me…..I still have to post something, and since I haven’t finished it and hate to be the lone voice of negativity in a world that loves this book, I’m not sure what the heck I’m gonna say.

This contest already ended but when I get the book back from my mom I’ll save it for you.

I’ve loaned a lot of the books I’ve read to a friend and my mom, but if you look through my reading list and see any books that strike your fancy, let me know and I’ll save them for you. We should be up there sometime before the end of the year and I can bring what I have then.
