My BEA Highlights

June 4, 2009

bookexpo_america1

I had a fabulous time in New York last weekend.  Rather than try to re-cap my adventure, I thought I’d just give you the highlights. Most of my time was spent at Book Expo America so most of the post is about it – it is an overwhelming, exhausting, wonderful event.

BEA - Kathy & Tinker at Rockefeller Ctr2

1.  Spending a weekend in New York with my fabulous husband.  We saw a Broadway play, Times Square, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, the stores on 5th Avenue, Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and Radio City Music Hall.  Carl did some sight seeing on his own while I was at BEA and even bought me a new iPod at the Apple Store while he was out! (The picture is of us at Rockefeller Center Plaza.)

BEA - Amy, Natasha, Julie, Serena, Anna 2

2.  Meeting other bloggers who I’ve been interacting with on line for close to a year now.  Every single blogger was exactly the way I expected them to be.   There were no awkward, getting-to-know-you moments – just hugs all around and lots to talk about.  Carl was happy to meet some of my “blogger buddies” too. (That’s Amy, Natasha, Julie, Serena and Anna in the picture.  I met lots of other bloggers too, but didn’t get everyone’s picture, I’m sad to say.)

BEA - Luis Urrea and Kathy

3.  Meeting authors, publishers and publicists.  I got autographs from 9 different authors.  Adriana Trigiani was gracious enough to autograph a book for me before I got there when My Friend Amy begged her.  Booking Mama pointed out Adriana later, and I went over to thank her and get a hug!  She is awesome and really appreciates her fans.  Luis Urrea and his wife Cindy are fantastic and made everyone feel special.  It was so nice to put faces to some of the publishers and publicists I’ve been dealing with.  It was also loads of fun to meet the adorable Laura and Fraser from Adaptive Blue.  They are so nice and appreciative of everyone’s support.  (Luis Urrea was kind enough to pose for a picture with me.)

4. Saturday morning’s author breakfast.  I went with several other bloggers and we got to hear Craig Ferguson, Jeanette Walls, Tracy Kidder and Ben Mezrich speak.  They were all interesting and well spoken.  We even scored books by all of them but Ben Mezrich.

BEA - bloggers from panel

5.  Book Blogger Panel.  This panel was organized by Jennifer who works for Random House and blogs as Book Club Girl and consisted of Julie of Booking Mama, Amy of My Friend Amy, Stephanie of Stephanie’s Written Word, Beth of Beth Fish Reads, Dawn of She is Too Fond of Books and Natasha of Maw Books Blog.  Let me tell you, these women are articulate, intelligent and passionate about books.  I was proud of them and the way they represented bloggers.  There was a standing room only crowd and lots of questions from the audience.  This is definitely a hot topic in publishing these days. (Left to right – Julie, Natasha, Jennifer, Stephanie, Beth, Dawn and Amy)

BEA was fantastic.  I recommend going next year if you’re interested in connecting with bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists or want to know about trends in publishing.  There were plenty of free galleys out there, but don’t go for them – they will be the most expensive free books you’ve ever owned in your life!  I’ve already started saving money for next year.

Great write up. It’s so hard to express how fantastic BEA was — from connecting with bloggers, hearing panels, meeting authors, talking with publicists and publicity and marketing people, to seeing how many fantastic books there are out there.

I’m already excited about meeting up again!

  2. June 4, 2009 7:28 am

I want to go next year very badly! I have already started planning and I think I can do it. I love the pictures and I’m glad you had such a fantastic time.

I’m glad you liked NY City. I visit it every year and every time I feel like that’s where I belong. I was at BEA also but because the life happened I didn’t get to go to the bloggers panel and all my plans to meet you all guys were ruined. I’m happy I went though and I am hoping that next year I’ll be better organized and finally meet you.

Fantastic post. I loved reliving it all again while I read your write-up. I am so glad we finally go to meet! I had a wonderful time hanging out!

  6. June 4, 2009 8:28 am

I just wrote this on Serena’s blog, too, but despite my huge aversion to traveling, I may have to consider going next year. You all make it sound soooo fun!

    So. jealous.

I’m glad you had a good trip – thanks for the pictures, so I can imagine I was there, too! =)

  8. June 4, 2009 8:45 am

    Fantastic wrap up post!!

You and Carl were able to see a lot of the city, given the short amount of time you had. That is wonderful. AND….you scored an iPod and a Kindle in the same calendar year?! How awesome is that 🙂

  9. June 4, 2009 8:59 am

Great pics! Now I can put faces with some blogging friends. I’m so glad that you had a good time. You really got to see a lot! Thanks for sharing so that those of us who couldn’t go get a feel for what it’s like. I’m so there next year!

  10. June 4, 2009 9:09 am

It was so much fun, wasn’t it? Every time I talk about it I feel like I’m gushing, but it was just about the best time I have ever spent with any group of people. It is hard to believe that I didn’t know any of them (or anything about blogging) a short two years ago.

You are sooooo right, those “free” books certainly are the most expensive ones I have ever gotten! I could have saved hundreds, stayed home and bought each one. But I wouldn’t trade last weekend for ANYTHING! 🙂

  11. June 4, 2009 9:24 am

I’m going next year! 🙂 (and I have to say one more time I’m so jealous you saw Kidder.)

  12. June 4, 2009 9:27 am

This isn’t much more than a daydream at this point, but I’m starting a BEA 2010 fund anyway 😀 I always did want to visit New York, and I’d LOVE to meet my blogging friends. Sounds like you all had a lovely time!

  13. June 4, 2009 10:49 am

I’m so glad you had so much fun. How great to meet all those bloggers and authors. Lucky you!!

  14. June 4, 2009 11:34 am

Kathy, your first photo inspired me to write a post for my feature “The Writer’s Block.” Then, I wanted to tell you that I love Anna’s story about The Girl’s bear and that the bear made it into the photo!

I read and reviewed Into The Beautiful North and wish I could have met Luis!

Okay… done being jealous of your fantastic trip!

    Have a great week!

    Sheri

  17. June 4, 2009 12:17 pm

What a wonderful write up and thanks so much for sharing the pictures! I’m planning on going next year if at all possible and now I know to pack an extra suitcase just for the free galleys. 🙂

I would have loved to have hear Jeanette Wells speak. Her memoir is still something I think about often. Did you get a copy of that or something else? I’d love to read more of her writing.

I’m glad you had a wonderful time, Kathy!

  18. June 4, 2009 12:41 pm

Sounds like you had a fantastic time. I keep telling myself that I will go next year.

  19. June 4, 2009 12:57 pm

What a great post! I really enjoyed meeting you and Carl, and I’m glad we did lunch. And you’re right — it felt like everyone already knew one another. Can’t wait to go next year.

  22. June 4, 2009 1:25 pm

Thanks for the great wrap-up. It was wonderful seeing all the pictures, especially. It sounds like you had a fabulous time. I’m going to see about going next year; I think one of the highlights must be meeting other bloggers! (Well, okay, meeting authors would be fun, too.)

  23. June 4, 2009 3:33 pm

I wish we had something like this in England. I am so jealous. It must have been like a book bloggers dream. I am so glad you all had a fabulous time. One day I might get to New York for it.

  24. June 4, 2009 4:19 pm

It was so great to meet you at BEA! I’m really hoping another meet up can be planned sometime in the future so I actually have a chance to chat longer with everyone. 😉

  25. June 4, 2009 4:42 pm

Thanks for sharing your trip with us, including great pictures. It sounds like you and your husband celebrated your anniversary in great style.

I’d also like to say thanks for your tweets during the Book Bloggers Panel. It was so frustrating to not be able to hear it via the radio. But the updates you sent were actually like an outline of the program. Good job.

  26. June 4, 2009 5:09 pm

I enjoyed reading your BEA highlights Kathy and the pictures complemented it all! What a great way to celebrate your anniversary! I am seriously considering attending next year and would love to meet fellow bloggers!

  27. June 4, 2009 5:45 pm

Never knew that the BEA was open to the public. But, I realize it meant more to me this year since I started blogging. Meeting the bloggers and the publicists I have met on line would have been exciting. Maybe next year I would like to go. I am glad to hear that you had a great time in NYC, and the BEA. Your husband sounds like a thoughtful gentleman, buying you a apple. Glad you had a great time. Would like to hear about the galleys.

  28. June 4, 2009 7:02 pm

I’m glad that you enjoyed your trip! Come again so we can hang out more!

  29. June 4, 2009 7:27 pm

Looks like a lot of fun! I’m glad everyone’s posting pictures and recaps – hopefully I’ll get to go next year. 🙂

I love your highlights and photos. I’m watching Craig Ferguson right now! It sounds like the experience was wonderful and it’s very cool that you were able to meet up with fellow bloggers!
And I’m glad that you at least got to see some of the NYC sights. We’re heading there on Sunday and I’m trying to find something we haven’t already done!
What show did you see and would you recommend it? We always see at least one. Love musicals 🙂
My friend works for WW Norton and I’m going there on Tuesday. She works at the booth for BEA so I am looking forward to hearing her take on it.
I’m very chatty tonight! Must be this second glass of wine 😉

  36. June 5, 2009 1:06 am

Great post! And you are just what I imagined…a wonderful person and friend. And so is Carl!

Literate Housewife…we got an ARC of Walls’ next book which is a novelization of her grandmother’s life. It sounds amazing.

  37. June 5, 2009 6:45 am

Great highlights for those who couldn’t go, great pics too Kathy.

  38. June 5, 2009 9:51 am

Great BEA recap. I really hope I’m able to make it to BEA 2010. I’ve never actually visited NYC even though I’ve been through it several times on the way to other destinations. I’m glad you had such a great time!

  39. June 5, 2009 12:26 pm

Thanks for adding the great pictures, I love placing faces to all the names I am so familiar with. It sounds like a great time and I so wish I could have gone. Maybe next year?

  40. June 5, 2009 2:40 pm

That sounds awesome! I’ll have to add it to the list of events I want to attend!

  41. June 5, 2009 5:02 pm

I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed yourself at BEA! And it was really nice to hear that you and your husband enjoyed some sight-seeing while in NYC.

Thanks for sharing about your experience, I’m going to start saving up now for 2010. It’s sounds like so much fun 🙂

  42. June 5, 2009 5:02 pm

I loved reading your post and looking at the pictures! I’m so jealous! I can only imagine how much fun y’all had meeting each other face to face. I’m glad you had such a great time. Oh, and kudos to Carl on the new iPod! Yay!

  43. June 5, 2009 5:42 pm

Kathy, I’m glad you had fun at BEA and with hubby.

  44. June 5, 2009 7:57 pm

Wow.. it sounds like you had a great time. I love this positive feedback. I love that hubby went also. Congrats for scoring an IPOD.. and thanks for the highlights.

  45. June 5, 2009 10:56 pm

Wonderful recap! The author luncheon sounds amazing! And I would have loved to have seen the blogger panel. The more I read about this, the more I want to try and go next year!

And isn’t New York the best????

  46. June 6, 2009 9:57 pm

Oh wow! I loved this post and seeing pictures and hearing all about it!! So jealous but so happy for everyone who was able to attend. Thanks for sharing!

  47. June 7, 2009 12:13 am

Very informative recap. Glad to read you and Carl got to spend some time seeing the sights around the city. Sounds like the blogger panel went well. 🙂

  48. June 7, 2009 5:04 am

I wish we would have had more time to chat!! There was just so much going on at BEA. And I heard that shipping from the shipping area was really expensive. I took all my books back in my suitcases, and I was even underweight.

  49. June 7, 2009 11:00 pm

Thanks for the overview! You and your husband are such a cute couple, and it was so sweet that he bought you an iPod!

  50. June 8, 2009 2:08 am

Hi Kathy! Just when I thought I’d read all the BEA posts, it occurred to me I hadn’t seen yours! I’m super jealous and hope that next year I’ll be able to attend. Also jealous that you scored the new jeanette Walls novel!! Great recap. Thanks for sharing and making us all envious!

  51. June 8, 2009 8:27 pm

It looks like you had a great time – and did some fun non-BEA stuff!

  52. June 9, 2009 3:38 pm

The weekend flew by, didn’t it?!? Yes, meeting so many people – book bloggers, authors, publishers, etc. was fantastic, and probably the highlight for me.

It looks like you and Carl packed a lot of sightseeing into your time in NY! I knew you were going to a show, but I didn’t realize how much of the city you saw on your whirlwind tour.

“the most expensive free books you’ll ever own” LOL! I don’t think anyone really goes for free books, that’s what the library is for 🙂

  53. June 10, 2009 9:09 pm

Oh my goodness–not only did you get to go to BEA but all those other wonderful things as well! I love NYC but haven’t been in years (3 months after 9/11–long time ago!). I evny you getting to meet other bloggers and them meeting you. One day… 🙂
