Review: Isolation

June 19, 2009

Isolation

Jim and Stephanie Miller are missionaries who have just returned with their children from a few years in Papau, New Guinea.  They saw unimaginable horrors while they were there and have returned worn out and full of doubt.  Stephanie is suffering from nightmares and sleepwalking and has woken up to find herself in some scary positions.  Jim is busy with a writing project and is too distracted to pay his family much attention.

When they’re offered a chance to get away for a few months in a mansion isolated in the mountains of North Carolina, Jim thinks it’s just what they need to clear their minds and bring their family closer together.  They head off to North Carolina, against the advice of Jim’s parents.

When they get to the mansion, they find they are sharing it with another missionary couple, but the house is so huge, it doesn’t really matter.  From the beginning, both Jim and Stephanie feel uneasy in the mansion and they both feel the presence of evil, but they never express it to each other.  They’re both determined to stick things out for the sake of the other.

Things seem to be going okay until Stephanie’s brother visits and they have a huge snowstorm that knocks out power and isolates them from the nearest community.  I don’t want to give away any more of the story, but that’s when things really begin to get creepy.

Isolation by Travis Thrasher is not the type of book I usually read, but I enjoyed it anyway.  I’m not a big fan of horror, because it keeps me awake at night, and while I found this book to be very creepy, it didn’t have that affect on me.  It’s published by Faith Words, but I didn’t find the book to be preachy at all – as a matter of fact, the characters doubted their faith throughout most of the book.  There is no sex or foul language in this book but there is violence.

I was hooked on this book right from the start.  The story line kept me interested throughout and there were a couple twists that I wasn’t expecting.  I even suspected the wrong person at one time.   One of the things that I enjoyed about this book is that you read some of the characters’ thoughts in first person even though it’s narrated in the third person.  I was so engrossed in the book, I would find myself urging characters to “get out of there” or “go back”.  They usually didn’t listen to me, though.

If you were hooked on the story from start to finish, it would be well worth reading. Thanks for the review Kathy…

I am really hoping that I win your giveaway especially now that Miriam’s added this book too. I listened to the radio show and thought Mr. Thrasher was just an all out great guy. Plus, he shares some of his favorite books with me!

Thanks for the review. I am hearing a lot of great things about this author and this book sounds fantastic. I need to add it to my TBR list!

That’s the thing about those characters. They never do what you want them to do. Did you watch Dial M for Murder? That was one of the themes.

Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed this book. I love Thrasher’s writing. I’m still envious that you got to meet him in person!

Not my genre either but I’m intrigued by the combination of faith and horror. Good review.

I will confess: I like being scared by books — but I can’t read them at night or I have bad dreams. It just amazes me that words on a page can create such emotions like fear. This sounds like a classic “trapped in a scary house” type book!

Oh, good, I’m glad this one wasn’t nightmare-inducing. I got a copy at my library sale, but I haven’t gotten around to it.

This sounds so great! I think I’d really like it. I enjoy both creepy and downright scary.

This sounds really interesting. The Christian fiction and horror combinination is one I haven’t read before. I’ll have to look for this one.

Great review. I love it when you guess the wrong person and then are completely surprised by who the actual person is.

You know it’s a good book when you talk to the characters, but they don’t listen to you. The author has you caring about them.

i read about your meeting the author at a local bookstore and put ‘ghostwriter’ on request at my local library. your review of isolation captivated me–i am dying to know what happens. i’m adding this title to my library request list! thanks. 🙂

  21. June 19, 2009 7:16 pm

I’m sure it would be too creepy for me.

You mentioned reading the character’s thoughts – I liked that, too, but thought it was redundant and took away from the action. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed by the ending, too. Glad you enjoyed it!

I haven’t read any Travis Thrasher but this review sure makes me want to. I enjoy creepy and love to hear about authors new to me who write good creepies! 😀 And I am heading over to that contest link now….

  25. June 20, 2009 7:36 pm

Sounds like a truly good book. I can’t read horror books any longer either because I really don’t enjoy being scared!! But suspense like this I can handle!!

  26. June 21, 2009 1:36 am

How dare those characters not listen to what you had to say! Great review, Kathy. 🙂

  27. June 21, 2009 2:17 am

I am not familiar with the author, but am definitely curious about the book after reading your review. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Kathy.

I don’t want to read your review because I have this book in my TBR pile. Glad to know you liked it, tho!

Great review! I really enjoyed Isolation, it was a page-turner for sure. I also liked that the religious aspect was more about faith in oneself – or at least that’s how I interpreted it.

  30. June 25, 2009 11:09 pm

Sounds creepy. I reserved it from the library.
