Summer’s here
Earlier, when I was downstairs, I could hear a bird chirping a lot. I looked out the front door and saw a bird running around frantically – it would take half a dozen steps, stop, lift a leg and chirp. Because I was standing there talking to the bird, Vance came to see what I was looking at and we watched for a while but went about our business when we determined that the bird wasn’t hurt.
A little while later, I went to run a few errands, and backed out of the garage. Imagine my surprise when I saw the same bird, another adult bird, and 2 babies running all over our front yard. I called Vance so he could see and rolled down my car window and took a few photos. You can see one of the adults in the top picture. The pictures aren’t the best since I was sitting in my car at the time, but I wanted to share their beauty. Can anyone identify these birds?

No clue about what type of birds, but they are really cute!
Hmmm…I love finding new birds…there is actually a new bluebird by our house lately that I just saw this morning. Not sure what this one is though, but it’s soooo cute! Thanks for sharing the pics.
These are very cute! I saw lots of little birds like this in Hawaii. They would come right up to you and say hi. No fear whatsoever!
Aww! Those are Killdeer – you can tell by the double black ring around the neck (on the mama, at least)… other plovers only have a single dark ring.
When they’re incubating eggs (they nest on the ground), the parents will do a broken-wing display where they run away from the nest holding their wing out like it’s hurt, so that hopefully the predator will follow them in hopes of an easy snack, and leave the eggs alone.
Yup. Those are killdeer. We have a large flock of them that love to hang out in the Target parking lot.
Wonderful pictures! I remember Killdeer well from when we lived in Wisconsin. Now we watch lizards from the window. Killdeer were way cuter!

we have a type of plover…I am not sure which kind, I need to get my binos out and check them out more carefully…that nest in a gravel parking lot where I work. Most of the lot is unused, but when they have laid their eggs, if you go out there, anywhere near the eggs, the adults will run around and make all sorts of noise to distract you away from the egg area. amusing…and effective.
Fun 🙂 We don’t have killdeer where I’m at, we live in town, but when I was growing up they were everywhere around my school. I always liked their call, but then again, I didn’t live next to them. It might get old after a while.
And you didn’t have to tell me summer was on, Mr. Thermometer already informed me 😉 100 degree heat index and advisory, and me with no AC. Sux!
Adorable! And now I know what killdeer look like 🙂 I looked outside my office window Tuesday and saw 3 mallards lounging on our lawn. I had so much fun following them around. My pics didn’t come out so well.

Was there a reason (injured baby or egg) that they were all congregating on your lawn or were they all just hanging out and that patch of grass was where they chose to do it?
I wish someone would tell it to New York. I don’t know when I’ve last seen the sun I think before BEA.
Great pics. They are lovely birds. We used to get ducks in our garden in the spring, now I get the odd noisy seagull.

Those are Killdeer. I used to watch them go crazy outside of my work window, when I worked for the school system. Great pics.
I love those birds. Killdeer as everyone has mentioned. Very prevalent here in Northern California. So very cute to see them protect their nest. I have watched these birds go to great lengths to keep one from stumbling upon their nest. It is almost comical. They have the sweetest babies too. When a Killdeer family is strolling about it is almost as cute as a duck family. Great post it made me smile.
I don’t know what kind of birds they are but how cute!
What pretty pics. We have more birds hanging around our place since we put out the bird feeder The Girl made at camp. Just this morning a beautiful yellow bird stopped by. Not sure what type of bird it was.
