Progressive Dinner Party – Pear and Blue Cheese Salad

December 8, 2009

This is the week of the Progressive Dinner Party that Amy, Julie and Nicole have organized.  You can find all of the details and links to all the recipes at the Book Blog Social Club.  Soups and salads are being featured today – I hope you enjoyed the Southern Peanut Soup you had at Lit and Life, and are ready for a good salad.

I know that blue cheese is one of those food items that you either love or hate – there doesn’t seem to be any in between with it.  If you’re a blue cheese lover like we are, you’re sure to love this salad.

Pear and Blue Cheese Salad

1 medium bunch romaine lettuce

2 medium red or green pears

¼ cup crumbled blue cheese

2 tablespoons chopped walnuts

mandarin oranges

vanilla yogurt covered raisins

sliced strawberries

Rinse and dry romaine lettuce – you will need about 8 cups of romaine pieces.

Cut each pear into fourths.  Cut the core and seeds from the center of each piece. (You can cut the pear into smaller pieces if you’d like.)

Add all ingredients to the romaine – this looks really nice as small, individual salads.

Make cider vinaigrette and pour over salad and toss.

Cider Vinaigrette

¼ cup olive or vegetable oil

2 tablespoons cider vinegar

½ teaspoon Dijon mustard

¼ teaspoon salt

dash of ground pepper

Head on over to Review From Here to get a taste of her Creamy Tomato Soup.  I hope you have fun and find a lot of great recipes to try today.  Enjoy!

I’ve had this salad many Thanksgivings (but not with the raisins) and it is just the best – it is always the hit of the meal!

I’ve never been able to stomach blue cheese. My dad loves it but I can’t stand it. Odd since I love just about every cheese.

I’m one of the ones who loves blue cheese – and pears and romaine and mandarin oranges and strawberries and everything else in this salad. I’m sure it tastes wonderful. I can also picture it on the table as well. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Sounds good! Might have to leave out the mustard from the viniagrette though!

Lovely! I share my household with a total cheese hater, and that is just regular, boring cheese. He would keel over in a fit if I ever tried serving something with blue cheese. Which is too bad, because I am a cheese lover (and a blue cheese lover as well)

What a fun idea! And that salad looks great. I don’t do as many salads as I should in cold weather.

I need all the help I can get! I won’t say that I’m a terrible cook, but really all I’m good at making are desserts (must be because I like them so much). 🙂
