Books Bought

January 22, 2010

Books Bought is a meme hosted by Cindy of Cindy’s Love of Books.  Sadly, the Borders Express in our town is going out of business.  I went to check out the bargains to be found and I was surprised at the great titles they had left.  This is what I came home with:

What books have you bought lately?

You got some good ones. I enjoyed Bel Canto and also Suite Francaise. Read that one with my book group. We talked about Lit at our recent meeting. We read Mary Karr’s first book and some members were looking forward to reading Lit. Some others said her angst was a bit too much for them. 🙂

You’re so lucky! It seems like whenever I get to the going out of business sales, all the good stuff is gone already!

  3. January 22, 2010 7:43 am

You got some terrific ones. I really enjoyed TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE and BEL CANTO. Can’t wait to read LIT — made tons of top 2009 lists!

  4. January 22, 2010 7:54 am

I absolutely loved The Time Traveller’s Wife, I hope you do too.

  5. January 22, 2010 8:14 am

I’ve heard about Suite Francaise. I would love to read it.

  6. January 22, 2010 8:19 am

I tried subscribing to comments again and again. I don’t think I know what I’m doing. I’ve never tried the management thingie. Don’t know how to do it.

you got some great bargains. I hope you like Supreme Courtship as much as we did. It’s just hilarious! Enjoy!

  8. January 22, 2010 8:45 am

You got a great pile of books. Too bad the Borders is closing, tho.

  9. January 22, 2010 8:48 am

Surprisingly enough, I have been very good this year. I have only bought two books- Wench & Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt. I am buying The Devil in Winter pretty soon too.

  10. January 22, 2010 8:53 am

Oh, I loved Suite Francaise! I just finished Mary Karr’s The Liar’s Club and I enjoyed that too. For sure I’m going to have to read “Cherry” and “Lit” as well.

It has actually been awhile since I’ve purchased books. I have darned many of them on my shelves! I guess it has been early December since I’ve been on a binge.

You got a great pile of books! I’ve heard great things about “Lit,” which is on my TBR list, and I thought “One Good Turn” wasn’t bad at all.

I haven’t purchased any new books lately. This year I’m trying to scale back on purchasing books since I really can’t afford it anymore. The library is my new friend now, though I expect that I’ll be buying books I can’t get soon enough through the library.

  12. January 22, 2010 9:33 am

I’m looking forward to reading Bel Canto! Good list of books you grabbed! 🙂

  13. January 22, 2010 9:37 am

You did get some great books there, hope you enjoy them. I have Supreme Courtship lying around wanting to be read.

  14. January 22, 2010 10:51 am

You got some excellent selections there. I have a waldenbooks that is going out of business and as you know I could’ve cleared out the place…I’d rather buy the books than have Borders throw them out!

  15. January 22, 2010 10:53 am

Enjoy the books. I hated when our Waldenbooks closed, but I did get some good deals.

  16. January 22, 2010 11:11 am

Kathy thanks for taking part in the books bought meme. I love seeing what people buy.

I actually have Time Traveler’s wife & Suite Francaise on my book shelf waiting to be read. Perhaps this will be the year that I read them.

Enjoy your books. You managed to get some really good books.

  17. January 22, 2010 11:12 am

Ooo… Suite Francaise! I haven’t read it, but I’ve wanted to for a long time.

I have kind of gone on a used book store/B&N binge in the last couple of weeks, and I need to stop.

    I’ve gotten:
(From B&N) — Push; Franny and Zooey (To replace a copy I lent to someone that never found its way back to me); Darkly Dreaming Dexter; The Sugar Queen; Maus I. Those 3-for-2 sales get me every time!

I also bought three books from the used book store, but I can’t remember their titles. All I know is one was by William Golding (author of Lord of the Flies) and one was by Sinclair Lewis. Drat!

Great stack! I’m coveting Suite Francaise and Bel Canto. I’ve read Irene Nemirovsky’s Fire in the Blood and it’s beautiful. They say Suite Francaise is even better.

  19. January 22, 2010 11:29 am

Great stack of books, you found some good ones. I bought Saving CeeCee Honeycutt last week.

That’s too bad the store will be closing 😦 I’m going to be reading Bel Canto soon. And my mom gave me The Time Traveller’s Wife and One Good Turn.

  21. January 22, 2010 1:03 pm

Bel Canto is one of my all-time favorites!

You picked up some great books! Suite Francaise was one of my top ten of ’08! I hope you enjoy them all.

  23. January 22, 2010 1:33 pm

It is sad to see a lot of Borders and Walden Book Stores closing down. You did get a lot of good books. I’d love to read Suite Francais and bel Canto this years. I owned them a while…LOL

  24. January 22, 2010 2:05 pm

Tell me when you are going to read Bel Canto and I’ll read it with you. I bought it and haven’t read it yet.

I love the Time Traveler’s Wife.

  25. January 22, 2010 2:11 pm

    Enjoy your choices.

I’m the minority I belive but I couldn’t stand the style of writing for Time Traverlers Wife, I pushed myself to read a little pass half way and finally gave up.

  26. January 22, 2010 3:33 pm

Supreme Courtship is new to me but I read the blurb on Amazon and its sounds very interesting!

I am relieved there are no book stores going out of business near me – I know I wouldn’t be able to contain myself!

    Enjoy your finds!

  27. January 22, 2010 4:29 pm

Excellent choices! The Borders Express near me is going out of business, too, so I’ve been staying away lest I break the bank.

    Enjoy!

  28. January 22, 2010 6:17 pm

You did get lucky – Lit is on my mental wish list. Enjoy!

  29. January 22, 2010 7:36 pm

It is heart breaking when a bookstore closes IMHO, and libraries are in trouble too. My local library is closed on Fridays and opens at 1 pm on Mondays.
But, I digress. I read and recommend Bel Canto, and will check to see how you like it.
This week I bought and read Winter Queen by Boris Akunin and it is a winner, a mystery set in Russia in 1876, and my husband enjoyed it too.
On my own blog today I posted a list of favorite books read in 2009, compiled by comments left by readers of my blog, with plenty of eclectic and intriguing TBR title ideas.

  30. January 22, 2010 8:21 pm

Wow, those are good titles. Lucky you. I think I have a copy of One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson at home, but I’m not sure. Funny how I can’t remember which books I have… =)

  31. January 22, 2010 9:06 pm

Oh oh oh … you got some good ones!!! Can’t wait to see what you think about some of them! And a lot of Borders Expresses around here are going out of business too … perhaps it is the whole chain?

  32. January 23, 2010 12:28 am

Wow great finds! I’ve read most of those and loved them! They recently closed all of the Borders Expresses in SF too.

  33. January 23, 2010 12:34 am

Sorry about the bookstore. You have a couple there I would love to read. I look forward to hearing about them.

  34. January 23, 2010 2:05 am

Enjoy! Looks like you made some great finds. I loved Time Traveler’s Wife and I just borrowed Bel Canto from the library after reading a bunch of good reviews.

  35. January 23, 2010 5:44 am

I know I would half that set from you! You got some good books !
But I am sorry that it is shutting sown, so sad!

  36. January 23, 2010 9:45 am

Some good finds! I loved Bel Canto and Time Time Traveler’s Wife. I recently spent a couple of weeks in Minneapolis and visited a great used bookstore – Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction bookstore in the front and Uncle Edgar’s Mystery Bookstore in the back of the building. I picked up Court of the Air in the sci-fi section and 2 Robert Crais novels (I do love my detectives!) in the mystery section.

It’s very sad about your local bookstore closing. There is nothing quite as valuable as a good bookstore in a community.

  37. January 23, 2010 1:55 pm

BEL CANTO is one of my all-time favorite books! And SUITE FRANCAISE has such an interesting back-story. Enjoy all your finds, Kathy …. sorry to hear about another bookstore closing.

  38. January 23, 2010 5:37 pm

Looks like you got some great books. I just read Lit and it was wonderful.

  39. January 24, 2010 12:46 pm

You got some dandy reads there. Bel Canto is one of my favourites. Enjoy your haul.

  40. January 25, 2010 4:24 pm

I really hope you enjoy the Sedaris book. I have that one and think it’s great. Well, I think all of his books are great, so don’t mind me!

  41. January 27, 2010 3:22 pm

Bel Canto wasn ‘t a favorite of mine but The Time Traveler’s Wife sure was. I have Suite Francaise on my shelf somewhere. I’ve been buying way too many eBooks lately. lol.

  42. January 28, 2010 1:51 pm

Great finds, especially Suite Francaise. Happy reading!
