Wondrous Words Wednesday

January 27, 2010

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading.  If you want to play along, grab the button, and join the fun!  (Don’t forget to leave a link in the comments if you’re participating.)

All of my words this week come from Searching for Tina Turner by Jacqueline E. Luckett.

1. frivol – “Maybe you can frivol away the day – and that, coincidentally, is compliments of this trip and all that work you’ve been complaining about – but I have to get up in two hours.”

I could pretty much figure this one out from context, but I wanted to be certain, because I just love the sound of it.  Frivol means to act frivolously.

2. bifurcated – “Power shifted their relationship, hers and Randall’s, bifurcated their growth, like a tree, into independent directions ignoring the trunk that made it one; forgetting to meet at a glorious crown, joined and whole.”

Bifurcate means to cause to divide into two branches or parts.

3. barmy– “A crazy laugh, like the made wife in Jane Eyre whose barmy laughter echoed through Rochester’s mansion.”

Barmy means full of froth or ferment.

I try to use barmy as much as possible in my daily life 😉

  2. January 27, 2010 7:19 am

I agree. “Barmy” is a daily thing in my house. 🙂

  3. January 27, 2010 7:23 am

Those are three really great words. Don’t think I’ve ever heard frivol – just frivolous. I once had to have dental surgery because of a “bifurcation.” It nearly drove me “barmy”! And I wasn’t able to “frivol” for quite a long time afterwards!

    I have three words here:

I love ‘frivol’, too. I think I could use that one.

  5. January 27, 2010 8:19 am

barney is who I am so….lol

I must agree that ‘frivol’ is a grand word. My plan is to work that word into my conversation today.

  6. January 27, 2010 8:20 am

    hmmm..that s/b barmy.
    because I am NOT purple.

Frivol is great! It needs to be paired up with freecell solitaire!

  8. January 27, 2010 8:33 am

Never saw any of your words…I learned 3 new words today. My words are posted here

I think I heard the word as a child in one of Kipling’s Just So Stories.Perhaps the crocodile in The Elephant’s Child grabbed him by his bifurcated trunk. I know the word fascinated me then and caused me to remember it. It may also may have been my first dim understanding that complex words are often made up of standard parts. Like bi in bifurcated, biennial (my mother was a gardener and spoke of biennials), and binary (met that one much later).

I knew bifurcated, but I haven’t used it in ages. Here’s mine: http://wordlily.com/2010/01/27/words-from-my-reading-33/

  11. January 27, 2010 9:12 am

Such fun words 🙂 I’ve always like the sound and feel of “barmy”.

  12. January 27, 2010 9:21 am

I haven’t seen bifurcated since college, I’ve always liked the sound of the word.

  13. January 27, 2010 9:27 am

    I love bifurcated!

I have a long list this week:

    Hi!
I didn’t know the meaning of those words. Thanks for sharing. I have been accused of getting barmy sometimes! Mine are posted at my place, Just Books. Have a great day!

I knew the first two but barmy is new to me. Now to figure out how to work it into a conversation today!

  16. January 27, 2010 11:09 am

I knew bifurcated (it’s pretty common in biology, esp. anatomy – talking about blood vessels bifurcating into the limbs, for example), and I’d heard barmy… but I really, really like “frivol”. There are just so many places where it’s appropriate.

Hello, all. I had gotten away from blogging for a bit, and now that I’ve returned, I’m very pleased to see that this meme is still in progress (altho, it seems I’ll need to update the accompanying pic)…to see my renewed participation, go here

    Happy Reading, everyone!

oops! See…apparently I’ve been gone TOO long! lol (please excuse the double post…or triple now!)

  20. January 27, 2010 12:01 pm

I’m currently trying to frivol my day away. 🙂

Thanks for introducing me to a fun word.

  21. January 27, 2010 12:01 pm

I’ve heard barmy so many times, but don’t think I’ve ever seen a definition of it before. It’s amazing how you can have a sense of a word, but not quite put your finger on how to define it. 🙂

  22. January 27, 2010 1:11 pm

Not one of my normal words but, bifurcated is one I remember from parenting books. Don’t let the kids do that to the parents.

My two new words are at Joyfully Retired

  23. January 27, 2010 1:20 pm

Barmy. Yes, that’s one of my all-time favourite words too. It’s just so evocative of someone or something that’s harmlessly nuts…like me really!

  26. January 27, 2010 3:13 pm

These great words will be added to my list! 🙂

  29. January 27, 2010 6:10 pm
