Review: A Nest for Celeste
Celeste is a little mouse living in the basement of a plantation home in Louisiana. She’s being terrorized by two rats and is forced to go to the dining room to hunt for food. The family cat spies her and poor Celeste is forced to flee farther upstairs. That actually turns out to be a good thing, though, because she finds a home with Joseph Mason, John James Audubon’s assistant. (Audubon is tutoring the family’s daughter, so that he, and his assistant, can work on their paintings.) Celeste goes on several adventures, learns a little about Audubon’s painting and learns to value friendships.
A Nest for Celeste by Henry Cole is a darling middle grade historical fiction book. There is a little about Audubon throughout the story and the afterword tells even more about him and his methods. I think the action and adventure will appeal to young readers, too.
The suggested reading age is 8 to 12 years old or grades 3 to 7, but I think it will appeal to the younger part of that range. I think younger children may need some help with the book, but they will probably enjoy it too.
A Nest for Celeste is illustrated by the author, and oh, what a beautiful job he does! Although this panel never appears in the book, it shows off the drawings wonderfully.

I’m reading this right now and I love it! The artwork is just awesome. I’ll be reviewing it next week. Glad that we are coincidentally giving this gem a little buzz.
Good review, I love the title. It rhymes.
This looks terrific and what amazing illustrations too.
This book does look gorgeous! The artwork is amazing and the story looks cute too! Thanks for sharing!
This sounds absolutely adorable! I can see a movie coming, too!
Looks delightful–just the kind of book I would have bought for my kids when they were younger!
My kids are grown, but I love that cover! It tempts me to buy the book and save it for the day when I have grandchildren.

What a sweet cover-I love these illustrated book-I was a huge B. Potter fan as a child okay even now and think this is where my love of illustrations came from.
This sound like an adorable book! I love those illustrations.
Awww, that is precious! I don’t really like mice, but I think I would become endeared after reading this. I think you are right though. I don’t think my 12 year old would be caught dead reading something like this!
This sounds so sweet and what an adorable book cover.
This does sound darling. And the illustrations are lovely.
I absolutely live mice. I know, that sounds strange, but I’ve loved them since I was a little girl. The illustrations in this book are fabulous! I’m going to purchase this right away. Thanks, Kathy!
How sweet!!

This sounds like a great book, and I like the illustrations. =)
I will have to check this one out for sure…my middle school grades range from 5th-8th so I’m always looking for great reads for those 5/6 grades.
It looks so cute! And I’m sure I’d learn a little more about Audubon, too.
I like the cover its too cute. Hmm will have to check this out when I am out. Thanks Kathy for the review.
What a sweet looking book. I know a special little girl who would love this. She will love the drawings. I’ll bet it gets picked up by one of the animators.
I just want to know why I can’t write a book like this one.
Simple seeming is often the hardest thing to do well.
This looks wonderful! I think the kids at my house will love it and I will too!
The drawings are beautiful – thanks for the recommendation!
It sounds (and looks) adorable!
What a nice book. I am requesting it at my library this week and will read it with my grandson…or he’ll read it without me. It’s nice that he can read on his own, but he doesn’t like to sit with me as often as he used to to read.
We now read side by side.
This looks wonderful!
Aww. The illustrations look so cute!
Love the panel you showed. So cute!
This is such a sweet book! Celeste is so cute!
That page tugs at my heart strings. I hope Celeste finds a home.
This looks like a really cute book, and the illustrations are darling! I might have to put this one on my list for a friend’s small boys.
I read about this a while ago and wanted to get it to review. It looks so perfect for my kids at school. Thanks for the review.
