BEA/NY Day 2

June 8, 2010

On Tuesday, May 25, Julie and I got up bright and early because Julie had secured tickets for Good Morning America for us!  We wanted to look good, since it was possible we’d be on national television.  Once we were ready, we walked from our hotel down to the Good Morning America studio and got in line at 6:15 AM.  We stood in that line outside for a while and were finally herded into a room only to discover that people who didn’t have tickets and had gotten there after us were in front of us in the “holding cell.”  We were a little put out at first, but quickly discovered that it didn’t really matter since absolutely nothing happened in that room, except hours of standing around.   At the last minute, we were all herded outside for a cooking segment so, after almost three hours, we actually saw five or ten minutes of the show.  My sister said she did see me though.  Overall, the experience was a disappointment, and I don’t recommend doing it when you’re in New York.

From Good Morning America, we headed up the street to Le Pain Quotidien because the daughter of a good friend of mine works there.  It was so good to see Colleen again, and Julie was a good sport while we visited and caught up with news.

After fueling up with breakfast, we walked to the Discovery Times Square Exposition to see the King Tut exhibit.   We’d purchased “Golden Tickets” which included the 3D movie and an audio tour and I loved every aspect of it!  I’m ready to read more about this time in history after going to the exhibit.

We had a little time to kill so we grabbed a bite to eat before meeting Lenore to walk over to the Javits Center to pick up our BEA badges and attend the Editor’s Buzz panel.  The panel was packed – people were lining the walls – but it was interesting and informative.  (Check out Candace’s recap here.)  I snagged two of the books on our way out.

For our evening event we decided to attend another New York Book Week event – this time at Books of Wonder.   Somehow, I came away with the only copy of Of All the Stupid Things by Alexandra Diaz in the store, but no one seemed to hold that against me.

Julie and I decided to join some of other bloggers attending the Books of Wonder event for dinner and we ended up at Rosa Mexicano.  We split up into two groups so we wouldn’t have to wait too long and we ended up having a lovely meal with Heather (and her famous notebook), Reagan, Natasha and Sheila.  It’s so much fun to unwind with other bloggers!  After dinner, Natasha took Julie and me on our first New York City subway ride – we were a little leery, but she’s quite a pro at it!  (That’s me with Natasha and Heather.)

Even with the disappointment of GMA, Tuesday was a fun filled day!  Julie and I got back to our room, tired and ready to rest up for Wednesday.

wow, looks like you had a lot of fun at BEA. Too bad GMA was a disappointment but you did get to experience it.

I hope you like Of All The Stupid Things. I enjoyed the book but it isn’t my favorite. I’ll be looking forward to your review.

I’m sorry it GMA was disappointing, it looks like you had other experiences that made up for it though. A good variety of cultural, social and bookish events.

It was great to see you at Books of Wonder!

  3. June 8, 2010 6:26 am

Despite a slow start at GMA, I’m glad the day went well. I loved the Tut exhibit when I saw it a number of years ago.

  4. June 8, 2010 6:48 am

Kathy, sorry your Good Morning American experience was a disappointment; perhaps better luck standing outside for the Today shoe LOL

    Great photos/

  5. June 8, 2010 7:09 am

It was a great day, wasn’t it? I think we’ll always have the GMA experience to laugh about!

  6. June 8, 2010 7:23 am

Good to know about the GMA. It was a blast having dinner with all of you. I had as much fun meeting all the wonderful bloggers as I did the actual BEA!

I made it to the King Tut exhibit as well my final day in NY and really enjoyed it too. It also brought books to mind – including Michelle Moran’s Nefertiti that I have been meaning to read for a while now.

  7. June 8, 2010 7:27 am

I feel rather envious after reading all these fabulous BEA posts. It looks like you packed so much into one day. Sorry to read that Good Morning America was a bit of a disappointment.

  8. June 8, 2010 7:41 am

I don’t normally watch GMA…I tend to watch the Today show if I’m home to see it. I’ve always wanted to be outside for one of those cooking segments.

Looks like you had a great time. Anna and I should have hung out with you guys!

Sorry to hear that your Good Morning America visit didn’t go as well as expected! It does sound like the rest of your day went well though! So glad that you had such a nice time in N.Y.!

  12. June 8, 2010 9:59 am

Love looking at the friends in the photo. I can tell you have enjoyed yourself. What fun!

  13. June 8, 2010 10:39 am

Sorry to hear about GMA, but I’m glad the rest of your day was better. I’m loving all of the pictures and putting a face to the blogs.

  14. June 8, 2010 10:39 am

Your week in BEA paralleled mine somewhat-I went to the Today show-to see my boyfriend Matt Lauer-how could I resist when I was in the city-like I needed another morning of early rising. I have been to Le Pain Q.-here in LA so I ended up at Madeline Cafe for croissants, I was at the other table at the Mexican restaurant and I also saw King Tut with Sheila. I need to read Cleopatra’s daughter and King Tut now. Have you ever read Cleopatra by M. George-I no longer have it but loved it.

  15. June 8, 2010 10:42 am

It looks like you had a lot of fun in New York. Am glad you did. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  16. June 8, 2010 11:06 am

It’s such a bummer when things do not work out like you hoped they would. Sounds like you gals made the most of it though and enjoyed the rest of your day.

  17. June 8, 2010 11:47 am

It sounds like you had a great time your first two days there!

  18. June 8, 2010 11:48 am

Disappointment aside, it does sound like a fun – and quite eventful! – day.

  19. June 8, 2010 12:29 pm

Kathy, I love hearing about your adventures in NYC. I will be heading there next month for a few days, and you’ve given me some ideas (about what NOT to do, too, no GMA!). 🙂

  20. June 8, 2010 12:46 pm

You have no idea how much I enjoy reading about your BEA adventures. Sorry that GMA was disappointing, but it sure sounds like everything else made up for it. Glad you had fun.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Kathy!

  24. June 8, 2010 4:12 pm

I would have loved to connect with the other bloggers too!! Nice pics! Looks like it was a fun day, even in spite of GMA!

  25. June 8, 2010 4:15 pm

Ohhh. I would have loved being able to go to New York and do this with all those bloggers who went there. Seems like you had a lot of fun even with the GMA-disappointment.

  26. June 8, 2010 5:53 pm

Oh that’s so disappointing about GMA! I was so excited to go on my first trip to NYC and didn’t realize we needed tickets, haha. I thought about going this time but knew I’d never want to get up that early. And it’s just not the same for me since Diane Sawyer and Chris Cuomo left!

As for the subway, I might be one of the strange ones but I love riding the subway! I think it’s so fun, lol!!

  27. June 8, 2010 6:24 pm

Thanks for your advice about attending Good Morning America. Sounds like that morning could have been better, but it also sounds like the rest of the day was fantastic.

Oh, that subway system . . . I’ll admit it’s a little scary and that it can get confusing if you don’t know your way around. On the Thursday of that week, Cindy, Avis and I took the subway part of the way to meet you for dinner. So disorienting . . .

  28. June 8, 2010 6:31 pm

Too bad about GMA but I’m glad you had the chance to see the King Tut exhibit!

  29. June 8, 2010 6:58 pm

Looks a wonderful time had by all.

  30. June 8, 2010 7:09 pm

Oh, so sorry GMA was a let-down. Maybe next time try the Today Show?

So jealous that you were able to get to some NY Book Week events – what a week for books in NYC!

I am going to have to head into the city soon just to revisit some of these great book stores that I’ve never been to – Books of Wonder, The Strand, etc.

  31. June 8, 2010 8:17 pm

you guys have all the fun. totally.

  32. June 8, 2010 8:42 pm

Sorry that Good Morning America was such a disappoinment! I’d rather try to get on Martha or Oprah or something. I bet the Tut exhibit was awesome! Glad you had so much fun 🙂

  33. June 8, 2010 8:51 pm

Too bad about the GMA thing! That has got to be disappointing.

  34. June 8, 2010 9:05 pm

It’s a bummer that the GMA thing wasn’t more thrilling but you probably would have been sorry if you hadn’t given it a try. It sounds like your BEA experience was lots of fun. I really hope I can go next year or the year after!

  35. June 8, 2010 9:27 pm

Sounds like a wonderful day!!! Too bad GMA turned out to be a bummer!!!

  36. June 9, 2010 1:31 am

Now that’s what I call a full day. You really fit a lot in. Too bad about GMA. I wouldn’t have done it anyway, I’m am so not a morning person. LOL!

I am pretty sure I will be coming next year and you would be at the top of my list of bloggers to meet!

  37. June 9, 2010 5:32 pm

I’m enjoying your recap of BEA. Almost as good as going.

  38. June 10, 2010 11:59 am

Hey! I just wanted to come by and tell you it was great to meet you in NYC. 🙂

  39. June 10, 2010 1:21 pm

    Sounds like fun! Swanky!

  40. June 11, 2010 1:54 am

sounds like a fun day even if GMA was a disappointment. I would have loved to go to the King Tut exhibition, Egypt fascinates me

  41. June 11, 2010 10:03 am

Too bad GMA was a bust. I felt that way about the Christmas Tree lighting when I went a few years ago. Sorry I missed a chance to meet you at BEA this year!

When we were in New York in 2000 we went to the Today Show and was much less formal and much more fun because we were outside the whole time.
    Looks like another fun day.

  43. June 15, 2010 12:49 pm

Sorry that GMA was a bit disappointing. I would have been upset having waited so long…never mind the anticipation before the trip!

The subway is pretty easy to navigate once you figure out whether you’re going uptown or downtown. We had a subway map and took it the entire time we were there, and it made things much easier. Plus, cheaper than a cab!
