Review: ZooBorns
Today’s zoos and aquariums are doing a lot to help preserve endangered species. Not only do they study these animals so they can develop conservation programs, they breed them in order to develop “assurance populations,” in case they do disappear in the wild. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums sets high standards and oversees programs for over 170 species.
In ZooBorns, Andrew Bleiman and Chris Eastland have created a wonderful book highlighting some of the rare animals that have been bred at AZA accredited facilities. Not only does this book feature adorable photos (like the one of the Fennec Fox on the cover), it gives readers a little bit of information about each species. I learned things like Grevy’s Zebras don’t drink water until three months of age and even though hyenas resemble dogs, they are more closely related to cats. Young children will enjoy the photos in this book, but the text is for older children and adults, so this is a book the whole family can enjoy together.
There’s not a lot of text in this book, so this is a quick read. I enjoyed reading it (and kept showing pictures to Carl) and have picked it up several times since to look through the photos. A portion of the proceeds from ZooBorns goes to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Conservation Endowment Fund. Be sure to check out zooborns.com to see more animal babies.
I haven’t read the book but i subscribe to the Zooborns blog and I love it. The animals are too cute.
That is the CUTEST COVER EVER. It saddens me that this is necessary for so many species, though
OMG I love the fox on the front cover. Surprised by the zebra fact, presuming they drink mother’s milk instead. Great book.
Such a cute book — and an educational one too!
That sounds like a great one. My older kids would love knowing all those animal facts.
I love going to zoos. This looks like a great book.
My daughter is doing a year-long project on the Fennec Fox, and she loves animals, so I bet she would love to read this book! I’ve seen the blog too…it just makes your heart melt!
Oh, this is definitely a book I would love to get a look at! I love animals, and think that it would be so cool to get a chance to see the babies that are being born at the zoo. I would also love to show the pictures to the little girl I take care of. Thanks for spotlighting this amazing looking book, Kathy! I am going to have to check it out!
This looks like just the kind of book I’d love to read with my daughter. The little fox is soooo cute!
I love the blog too. Who can resist pictures of cute babies?!!
What a great idea for a book and a fundraiser! As Jill says, who doesn’t love baby animals?
I have an animal-lover in my house who would love this!
I didn’t know about this book or blog. Where have I been! Thanks for the review and links. The baby animals are adorable.
Awwww, tha’s a fox? So cute! 😀
I’ll have to check out the blog! For four years, I worked at an AZA-accredited zoo that participated in its SSP (species survival plan) and conservation missions – I don’t think zoos get enough credit for the work they do in that arena.
Oh my gosh, that’s a cute cover. My day care little ones are going to love this. We look at animal pictures almost every day. Too cute!
Looks like a great book for animal lovers! I love that a portion of the proceeds help zoo animals! 🙂
I LOVE books like that. Isn’t it impossible to look at them and not have someone nearby who you can show every cute picture to?
That is a great book…I just read that there are less than 3500 tigers left in the wild so we have to tune in to saving all species…it is so sad…I would have looked at the photos over and over again, too…
What a great this book this must be! I hadn’t heard of it before today. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Kathy!
Heading over to the Zooborn blog right now…
There’s a blog, too. Yay! I am always very torn about zoos, perhaps this will give me a fresh perspective! 🙂
Adorable cover! What a fantastric book, Kathy! I’m definitely going to buy this one and follow the blog. It’s a great idea of the authors to write up a book – it’s a good way to reach and educate more people.
Thank you for blogging about it.

I agree, I love that cover! I’ll be checking out the blog too.
I remember seeing anothere review and thinking I had to have this one but somehow I forgot (it’s not like I have a lot going on here or anything). Looks like a fun gift too.
Oh my goodness my daughter would love that book. She adores all animals and squeals every time she sees a baby one.
That book sounds cute! I’m really eager to see the photos, lol!
What an interesting idea … and I just adore that cover!
The cover is so cute! If the rest of the pictures are like that, then I’m sure they’re amazing!
Thanks so much for sharing ZooBorns with your readers! We would love to send you free copies of the books if you might be interested. You can email us at submissions at zooborns dot com
All the Best,
Andrew
It looks like a very cute book. I clicked on the link and was happy to see the baby Leopard at the Saint Louis Zoo featured in yesterday’s post.
I haven’t seen the book but the photos on the site are so cute.
I’m sure The Girl would absolutely love this. Thanks for the recommendation!
I love this one and will order it for my library shelves! 😀
So cute!! We have it at the bookstore I work at..we love looking through it!
I love the zooborns site and visit it almost every day to get a dose of baby animal cuteness. 🙂 I’m sure I’d love the book too.
It’s so good that the proceeds of the book goes to raising funds. It looks so interesting too. I like zoos and when I go to a good one, I’m absolutely thrilled.
the picture on the cover is too cute. That is one tiny little animal.
Happy to hear you enjoyed this one with Carl.
I showed my 8-year-old this post and we looked up the Zooborn site. You guessed it — she bookmarked it! Too cute – thanks for bringing this book to our attention, Kathy.
That cover alone has to get kids interested in the book! Those ears, lol.
