Review: ZooBorns
Today’s zoos and aquariums are doing a lot to help preserve endangered species. Not only do they study these animals so they can develop conservation programs, they breed them in order to develop “assurance populations,” in case they do disappear in the wild. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums sets high standards and oversees programs for over 170 species.
In ZooBorns, Andrew Bleiman and Chris Eastland have created a wonderful book highlighting some of the rare animals that have been bred at AZA accredited facilities. Not only does this book feature adorable photos (like the one of the Fennec Fox on the cover), it gives readers a little bit of information about each species. I learned things like Grevy’s Zebras don’t drink water until three months of age and even though hyenas resemble dogs, they are more closely related to cats. Young children will enjoy the photos in this book, but the text is for older children and adults, so this is a book the whole family can enjoy together.
There’s not a lot of text in this book, so this is a quick read. I enjoyed reading it (and kept showing pictures to Carl) and have picked it up several times since to look through the photos. A portion of the proceeds from ZooBorns goes to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Conservation Endowment Fund. Be sure to check out zooborns.com to see more animal babies.

That is the CUTEST COVER EVER. It saddens me that this is necessary for so many species, though
OMG I love the fox on the front cover. Surprised by the zebra fact, presuming they drink mother’s milk instead. Great book.

I’ll have to check out the blog! For four years, I worked at an AZA-accredited zoo that participated in its SSP (species survival plan) and conservation missions – I don’t think zoos get enough credit for the work they do in that arena.

I LOVE books like that. Isn’t it impossible to look at them and not have someone nearby who you can show every cute picture to?
That is a great book…I just read that there are less than 3500 tigers left in the wild so we have to tune in to saving all species…it is so sad…I would have looked at the photos over and over again, too…
