Review: The Lincoln Lawyer

March 25, 2011

Mickey Haller is a defense attorney who runs his practice out of the back of a Lincoln Town Car.  He’s good at what he does, but for him, it’s not about defending innocent clients, it’s all about the money.  In fact, he says an innocent client is the worst kind to have, because the verdict really matters then.

When a wealthy young man is arrested for assault and asks for Mickey to defend him, Mickey sees dollar signs at first.  After meeting his client, he fears that he may just have encountered a dreaded innocent defendant.  But things aren’t always as they appear and Mickey finds himself tangled in an evil web of destruction.

The Lincoln Lawyer, by Michael Connelly, was quite the page turner!   Connelly does a wonderful job of building tension from the start to the finish.  I was hooked from the very beginning and can’t wait to read the next book in the Mickey Haller series.  Not only is the book loaded with great characters, the story is captivating – I had to know what Mickey was going to do to get out of the mess he found himself in.   Even though I didn’t always like the things Mickey did, I loved his character – he was confident and cool and quite a schemer in his own right.

While the book is a work of fiction, Connelly researched for several years before writing it, so you know  there is some truth in there and it will really make you think about our justice system.   I sure hope there are attorneys out there who care about more than their bottom line.   If you enjoy legal thrillers, you don’t want to miss The Lincoln Lawyer!

I have not read a Connelly book but after seeing the movie trailer I think I should read this one. It sounds like a very riveting story. I am looking forward to the movie also. All I can say about the movie is…Matthew McConaughey. He’s not hard to look at for a couple of hours!

It has been ages since I’ve read a legal thriller like this – none since my Grisham days – but it sounds like this is one I should pick up.

I’ve been waiting to hear what you thought of the book, Kathy. I must agree it’s a page-turner but too bad I couldn’t get over my dislike of Mickey Haller. Maybe it was because I never pictured him as Matthew McConaughey! 😀

I just read my first Michael Connelly, from his Harry Bosch series and really enjoyed it. Sounds like I should give this one a try to. I do like well-done legal thrillers.

I didn’t realize that was what the Lincoln in the title referred to.

  25. March 25, 2011 9:44 pm

I’ve got this one sitting on my desk and my husband keeps asking me if I’ve read it yet as I have to read the book before seeing the movie. I guess he wants to go to the movie.

  30. March 26, 2011 4:54 pm

It’s funny, but I wasn’t really interested in this book, then I read Margot’s review of the movie, and now your review of the book, and I’m adding it to my to-read list now!

  31. March 26, 2011 7:34 pm

Wait this is the one with hunky Matthew M! Going to do the bad thing and watch the movie then maybe read this one next.

PS. I noticed under currently reading Posed for Murder… I’m so jealous! I’ll hold off buying since I need to your feedback first. Can’t wait to read your thoughts on this one next!

I’m not much of a legal thriller fan, but with the movie and the number of great things I’ve heard about this book, I definitely want to read it.

Also, I say I’m not a legal thriller fan, yet I’ve been reading and enjoying a lot of them lately!! So I’ll be picking this one up.
