Book Expo 2018 – Day Three

Julie and I didn’t have any early morning events on Friday, June 1 but we’re both early risers so we were up and at ’em fairly early.  We weren’t too far from the Javits so we decided to walk and stopped at Junior’s for breakfast along the way.

We got into the trade show floor as it opened.  It seemed smaller and less crowded to us this year so, after a few hours, we were ready for a break and headed back to As Is.  We made sure to be back at the Javits in plenty of time for Reading Group Guides Book Group Speed Dating event, an event I adore.  At this event, everyone’s assigned a table and publicists rotate from table to table, pitching great book club reads to you.  They’re given about 10 minutes to tell you about some great books, and it’s well organized and great fun.  Some of the books from the event I’m excited about are:

• THE THREE ESCAPES OF HANNAH ARENDT by Ken Krimstein (Bloomsbury; 9/25/2018)  This graphic biography tells the story of the prominent twentieth century philosopher and political theorist, Hannah Arendt.
• LISTEN TO THE MARRIAGE by John Jay Osborn (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; 10/2/18) Osborn’s first book in twenty years tells the story of a marriage that’s falling apart from the perspective of a marriage counselor.
• THE AGE OF LIGHT by Whitney Scharer (Little, Brown; 2/5/2019) is historical fiction set in Paris during the 1930s.  It’s about the relationship between Vogue model and photographer Lee Miller and artist Man Ray.
• BEAUTIFUL BAD by Annie Ward (Park Row Books; 3/19/19) Twelve publisher bid on this book dubbed “2019’s thriller of the year” with the tag line “the perfect marriage leads to the perfect crime.”

• CAR TROUBLE by Robert Rorke (Harper Perennial; 9/11/2018)  Set in 1970s Brooklyn, this coming of age story tells the story of a sensitive teen dealing with an alcoholic and abusive father framed by the cars from his childhood.
• KILLING IT: AN EDUCATION by Camas Davis (Penguin Press; 7/24/2018) When Davis was laid off from her job as food writer, she decided to fly to France to learn to be a butcher and she shares her story in this memoir.
• BOOMER1 by Daniel Torday (St. Martin’s Press; 9/18/2018) This story of social media gone wrong is told from the perspective of Millennials and a Baby Boomer.
• FAMILY TRUST by Kathy Wang (William Morrow; 10/30/2018)  The patriarch of a Chinese-American family has always claimed to have a fortune and now that he’s dying his family is forced to figure out what they value most.

We shipped our books after that great event and then had a nice dinner at Patzeria, a great little restaurant Julie and her husband discovered last year.

Our last stop of the day was at The Lounge in SoHo for a party given by Big Honcho Media.  The venue was wonderful and the refreshments from Milk and Cream Cereal Bar were almost too cute to eat.
