The Week in Review: 04.24.2020

April 24, 2020

Between the Covers

Finished last week:

When Iris and Ivy’s parents divorce the twins are separated – Ivy lives with their dad while Iris stays with their mom.  They see each on the occasional weekend and holiday and for a few weeks in the summer.  When their mother dies, Iris comes to live with Ivy and their dad.  Ivy thinks Iris is trying to take over her life and turning her friends against her but no one else sees it.  Is she right or is she paranoid?

I listened to THE TWIN by Natasha Preston and liked it a lot.  Things are different for Ivy when her twin sister comes to live with her and her dad but readers aren’t quite sure if Iris is after her or if Ivy is jealous or paranoid.  Since it’s aimed at the YA audience the book isn’t graphic.  I liked the way Preston kicked up the tension and was shocked by the big twist at the end.  Emma Galvin does a great job with the audio.  (Review copy provided by Penguin Random House.)

ONE FOX: A COUNTING BOOK THRILLER by Kate Read is a unique counting picture book.  It counts from one to ten starting with one very hungry fox.  The tension ramps up when it discovers three hens but the author is sure to note

No hens or foxes were harmed in the making of this book.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous – even the endpapers are beautiful.  I love this picture book and think little ones will delight in the story and the surprise ending and will enjoy the pictures as well.  (Review copy provided by Peachtree Publishers.)

I’m a big fan of memoirs and I’d heard good things about WILD GAME: MY MOTHER, HER LOVER, AND ME by Adrienne Brodeur so I was excited to pick it up.  When Brodeur was a young teen, her mother decided to take her into her confidence about an extra-marital affair she was having.  Not only did her mother tell her some deeply personal things, she enlisted her to help cover up the affair.  Brodeur didn’t realize the oddity of her situation until she was older and making some poor relationship decisions of her own.

I liked this book quite a bit but didn’t love it the way others have.  The writing was great and the story was unsettling but there just wasn’t enough meat to the story, if that makes sense.  Of course, the timing of my reading the book could have impacted my enjoyment as well – it can be hard to focus right now!  If you like memoirs and/or family stories, give this one a try.  (Review copy provided by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.)

  • The highlight of our week was when our Instacart shopper scored toilet paper for us at Costco.
  • I played games with some friends virtually this week, using a chat app.  It wasn’t perfect but it was fun and it sure was good to laugh with everyone again!
  • I walked at least three miles every morning and averaged just under 16,850 Fitbit steps a day.

What’s going on in your corner of the world?

One Fox looks like one my grandchildren would love!
I continue to knit, read, work on a jigsaw puzzle and catch up on Top Chef seasons (on Hulu). Also an occasional walk. Have a good week, Kathy, and stay well!

“One Fox” a thriller sounds interesting for our grands. Our Instacart person git toilet paper as well — Scott’s, not one I normally buy but, TP nonetheless LOL. I meant to start Wild Game but I haven’t yet.

See if you can get the audio of Eught Perfect Murders, Swanson — listening time it now and just so engaging.

Pretty exciting about the toilet paper – we haven’t been so lucky here!

Woo hoo…toilet paper!!! I managed to score a 6-roll pack on Monday, but with five of us it won’t last long.

I’ve been on the fence about Wild Game. There are a lot of books I’m more excited about right now.

  5. April 24, 2020 9:57 am

    Yay, toilet paper! LOL.

I like the look of The Twin…and I’m also curious about the memoir.

I downloaded Pretty Things this week.

I love playing cards online but haven’t found many people willing to do it. I’ve played a couple of times with a friend of my daughter’s, although my daughter is usually too busy to join.

Sounds like a good week for you.

OOH! I do like the sound of The Twin, its definitely one I shall keep a look out for.

YAY Great that you managed to get some of that elusive loo roll. I don’t know about where you are but here its flour that is worth its weight in gold.

The first two book look good, the third would be a pass for me. I’m not big on affairs, and telling your daughter about yours is just weird, to say the least.

We have an Amazon subscription for most household items like toilet paper, paper towels, laundry supplies. They are delivered monthly or bi-monthly. Thankfully I haven’t had to worry about those items.

Thank you for your honest book reviews. A highlight of my week also involved finding TP while on a shopping trip! Keep up the impressive step count! I have days when I am a slouch, as well as good days due to running more. 🙂

    Yay toilet paper!

  12. April 24, 2020 4:12 pm

I really don’t understand why TP is still in such demand. I understood in the beginning because people immediately assumed it would be weeks before they could get to a store again most people are still shopping weekly so I don’t get it.

I hear you on the distraction. I am finding it hard to focus on books even when they are pretty good. I mean, here we are with extra time to read and then we can’t.

I had to pick up three prescriptions for my husband today at Walmart and I was thrilled to see that they had shelves filled with TP. My regular grocery store (Fred Meyers) has been out every time I’ve gone for over 6 weeks. I was allowed to buy two packages, which made my day! Now to find some yeast since we want to make bread (not that our stores are out of that, but still…). I wonder how long it will be before we see a shortage of bacon.

I’ve seen Wild Game around but I guess I didn’t know what it was about. Sounds rough that a mom would bring her daughter into her confidences about an affair … but perhaps it’s more common than one would guess …. argh

All different reads I hope you like them. We are still in strict curfew though I do see vehicles a few so passes must be issued to essential workers. Upto now it was only the medical personnel and military on the roads. No idea when it will be lifted but we all doing ok.

The Twin sounds like a good one. I am glad you enjoyed it. I hope you are enjoying your current reads. Killer Ambition is on my TBR shelf. I’ve yet to read a Marcia Clark book, can you believe it? I don’t know why I haven’t. Yay for buying toilet paper! My husband said the stores are still out here. They don’t have any paper products. 😦

I hope you have a good week, Kathy. Stay safe and well.

Hurray for toilet paper. We tried ordering five times from Amazon, and each time the order was marked delayed or lost. I cancelled all of these. Thank goodness our family sent toilet paper from Chicago.

We Cybils Awards judges (I can reveal this now) loved One Fox and it ended up on our shortlist and then winning as Best Fiction Picture Book. It is the first of that genre for the picture book crowd and it’s perfect for them.

I’ve downloaded Scrabble Go, and, in anticipation of playing some games online, I’ve been practicing with some solo games. Sadly I’m not very good. Perhaps if I get some more practice.

We received our first jigsaw puzzle of the pandemic. We’re happy to give that a try.

    Have a good week, Kathy.

Yay about the toilet paper and The Twin sounds good.Wild Game sounds shocking and also sad that her mother would put her in that kind of position.
    Enjoy your reading this week.

  19. April 26, 2020 11:08 am

I also scored TP off the shelf this week! Most our store stock is starting to come back finally. I’m kind of intrigued by Wild Game.

Wishing you a great reading week, be well x

I walk about 3 miles every day (well during the week, on weekends I do yardwork). I haven’t scored my brand of toilet paper yet. I’m doing a Sam’s Club order this week so fingers crossed. The Twin looks good. See what I’ve been up to at Girl Who Reads.

  21. April 26, 2020 11:38 am

Both The Twin and One Fox sound fabulous, so I’d like to read those! I’ll be checking them out. I’ve been playing more games than usual these past few weeks – really helping keep things fun once in a while.

  22. April 26, 2020 12:21 pm

Last week our Giant Eagle delivery had TP, paper towels, AND disinfecting wipes! I felt like we had hit the lottery!

The Twin sounds so good–an intriguing YA works for me every time. And scoring TP from Costco–it’s like winning the lottery 🙂

Congrats on scoring toilet paper! That stuff is hard to find. The fox book looks adorable. I’m already planning which books I’m going to get my niece for Christmas.

  25. April 27, 2020 11:51 am

Congrats on the toilet paper…how strange it is to type that. I hope you have a great week.

  26. April 27, 2020 4:38 pm

Yay to the toilet paper! We scored some too this last week at Costco. Great work on your walks every morning too. I’m really impressed. I’ve heard great things about that memoir. I look forward to reading it soon. I hope you have a great week!
