Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun.
1. camber – I found this word in The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It was used like this, “And there were tricks to the camber of certain turns, places where the track appeared level from inside a car but were actually graded ever so slightly – usually by design to allow rainwater to funnel off the track and not puddle dangerously.”
Camber means a slight convexity, arching or curvature (as of a beam, deck or road).
2. lustrums – This word was used in Life’s That Way by Jim Beaver – “Fifteen years later, there we still were, leaving only to move into a new and better home, one with infinitely greater demands, but one I looked forward to with a joyous anticipation completely reversing the diffidence I’d felt three lustrums earlier.”
A lustrum is a period of five years.

Those words are both completely new to me! Lustrum in particular strikes me as a particularly strange.

I’ve seen camber before, I think in reading about architectural design. But lustrum is new and sounds wonderful.
There is a word for a five year period of time? I had no idea. I think he made it up. Just kidding.

I’m with Kaye–I’m going to start using lustrums instead of years to measure my age!
I can imagine myself using “camber” but “lustrums” would sound like a mistake coming out of my mouth! Very interesting though — kind of sounds like the name of a flower!
I like those words. Now I’ll be thinking about how I can fit them into a sentence without sounding pretentious. 🙂
The Lustrums strikes me. I am with Kaye and Lisa…I am going to use lustrums to measure my years of age. 🙂

Those are both great words! I love lustrum, I think I can actually use that one. I love it when words have such a rich sound to them, camberrrrrr, lustrummmmm… 🙂

How is The Art of Racing in the Rain? I heard about on book chatter and it sounds like a good book club book, but I haven’t heard anything on the blogs. What do you think so far?

Camber is a cool word. I need to remember that one. Lustrums surprised me. I had no idea there was such a term for that.

Camber I knew, Lustrum was new to me as well. I like it and since we have “decade” and “score” it’s only fitting there is a word for a 5 year period. I feel smarter. Do I look smarter?
Lustrum is a terrific word! very useful.
I haven’t discovered any new words lately, which obviously means I’m not paying enough attention or looking hard enough. I love “lustrums”…great word.
