Giveaway: Coraline

March 1, 2009

coraline-for-giveaway

Thanks to Harper Collins, I am hosting a giveaway for 3 copies of Neil Gaiman’s book Coraline.  You can read my thoughts on the movie and on the book – I recommend both of them.  The three winners will receive a copy of the book with the cover pictured above.

This giveaway is open to residents of the U. S.  It ends at midnight on Saturday, March 7, 2009 and winners will be announced on Sunday, March 8, 2009.  To make this one a little interesting, you have to answer this question to enter:  What is your favorite book to movie adaptation?  Winners will be chosen from among all those who answered the question, using random.org.

Hi Kathy, thank you so much for your kind words about my friend Barbara. It really helps to have someone as kind and caring as yourself be there and reach out as you did. That short tribute did not even begin to do justice to her.

  2. March 1, 2009 8:41 am

I already have the book (though I’m almost tempted to enter because I don’t have THAT edition, but I won’t be greedy :P), but awesome giveaway!

  3. March 1, 2009 8:44 am

Oh, how exciting! Here is my answer: Gone With the Wind. I haven’t read or seen Coraline and I would love to have a chance to read the book. I think my husband would love it, too.

  4. March 1, 2009 9:10 am

Favorite book to movie adaptation is probably The Godfather.

    Thanks for the contest!

I also love Gone With the Wind, but two other favorites include Remains of the Day and Ang Lee’s Sense & Sensibility, both wonderful adaptations. Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway!

I think my favorite book to film adaptation would be To Kill A Mockingbird. I think they did a very good job capturing the spirit of the book and Gregory Peck is wonderful as Atticus.

I haven’t read Coraline so I would love to before I saw the movie.

  12. March 1, 2009 10:10 am

My favorite is “To Kill a Mockingbird” – the movie stayed true to the book, and in my opinion, no one else will ever be Atticus Finch – Gregory Peck defined that role.

I would have to say Breakfast at Tiffany’s is my favorite adaptation. Although I do think the way the Harry Potter movies aged with the characters was really effective. It was one of the more interesting aspects of the books and I thought the transition to movie would be difficult.

  14. March 1, 2009 10:22 am

I’d so love a chance to win this book.

I really liked Message In a Bottle. It was a wonderful book and I thought the movie did well (=

My all-time favorite book-to-movie adaptation is The Hours. Book and movie are equally beautiful.

  17. March 1, 2009 11:18 am

My favorite is probably the Harry Potter movies. I have to view them as something separate from the books bc they are so different but I love them so much.

  18. March 1, 2009 11:26 am

My favorite is the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. They just captured all the wonder of the books for me!

  19. March 1, 2009 11:26 am

Best book-to-movie? Hands down, Joyce Maynard’s To Die For. The ending has this sight gag that just WORKED on film. No words needed.

No need to enter me, though. You know I like to talk about books!

And I like to say thanks for the e-mail, so I know to post this over at Win a Book. I try to lurk via my reader, but it’s easily overwhelmed anymore!

I think a great book to movie would be “The Golden Compass” or “The Lord of the Rings”. There is also Anne Rice’s “Interview with a vampire”, or Stephen Kings “Carrie” and “The Shining”. Both of Kings movies would be the earlier adaptions, the more updated versions…not so much. Most of King’s movies fall short of the books. The two listed in the here are the exceptions to the rule. Thanks for this opportunity, please enter me in this drawing. Indigo

  23. March 1, 2009 11:53 am

  31. March 1, 2009 1:30 pm

Like I need another book to read, but I’ve been wanting this one! I would have to say my favorite book to movie adaptation has been, The Shining. The movie was just as haunting as the book. I try to read the books before the movies, and most of the time I am disappointed. The books are usually always better.

    shelcows AT gmail DOT com

  32. March 1, 2009 1:38 pm

I would have to say either Stephen King’s the Green Mile or The Bone Collector

  33. March 1, 2009 1:44 pm

At the top of my list is Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange.” Thanks for a great giveaway!

  34. March 1, 2009 1:44 pm

You know, I used to have a copy of Coraline, but I think I let a student have it when I quit teaching… Silly me.

I’d have to say my favorite book-to-movie adaptation is Sense & Sensibility (w/ Emma Thompson). I saw the movie before I read the book and after I read the book, I felt that I hadn’t gained much new insight at all. I’m rather sorry, though, that I Bookcrossed the book, because after taking a grad class on early women writers, I’d like to read it again. (I have a much better appreciation for Jane Austen’s work now.)

  36. March 1, 2009 2:14 pm

Does The Importance of Being Earnest count, as a play? I don’t generally like adaptations, although I liked Coraline. Maybe Ella Enchanted, I liked that movie better than the book!

  37. March 1, 2009 2:27 pm

I’d say Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I definitely like the original, Gene Wilder version better.

  40. March 1, 2009 3:23 pm

I’ve already got this book, so don’t enter me! I have to answer the question, though. I have two particular favorite adaptations: About a Boy and The Remains of the Day. 42. March 1, 2009 3:58 pm

Wow, there are SO many book-to-movie adaptations that are done reeeally well. Um but I think hands down it would be The Lord of the Rings. Just because there is so much to encompass and Peter Jackson did it amazingly!

  43. March 1, 2009 4:00 pm

My favorite movie to book adaptation-that’s hard because there’s so many but I guess I would say – It- by Stephen King. And please count me in on the Coraline giveaway. Thanks : D

  44. March 1, 2009 4:02 pm

The first Harry Potter movie — it stuck fairly close to the book. Thanks.

  45. March 1, 2009 4:02 pm

I vote for Kenneth Branagh’s version of “Much Ado About Nothing” – honestly, with that cast, how can you go wrong??

  46. March 1, 2009 4:05 pm

I love the first Harry Potter movie because it was so true to the book. As the later movies came out they had to cut a lot from the plots because the books are so huge and involve so much more. I still love the later movies, but I like the first movie the best. I also think that they did an excellent job of choosing actors to reflect the characters in the book, especially Professor Snape.

  47. March 1, 2009 4:09 pm

Wow! Enter me, please!!! =) My favorite movie-to-book adaptation has to be Charlotte’s Web. 52. March 1, 2009 6:36 pm

I’m really old….Gone With the Wind!

  53. March 1, 2009 6:40 pm

The best book-to-movie adaptation.. hmm, that’s difficult, but I’d have to say I really enjoyed both Holes and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. (This is also because I read mainly YA and can’t really think of other adaptations.) Both remained mostly faithful to the book while, in a sense, “making the story their own”. Plus, they were both well directed.

  54. March 1, 2009 6:40 pm

Great giveaway! My favorite book to movie adaptation is Lord of the Rings because the movies are actually a lot better than the books!

  55. March 1, 2009 7:01 pm

Great giveaway and I love the cover of the book. My favourite movie adaptation is Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix. I didn’t really like the book, so I was a little worried when I went to see the movie, but I found that it was better than the book. And while Harry was still annoying, I understood it better seeing it on the screen, then reading it.

    Thanks!

I didn’t watch the dvd with him because I told him I read the book. He talked of the movie, I’d mention the book. Finally I got him interested enough to read it to see if he could find any differences. And I watched the movie so we could discuss the similarities and differences. My favorite book to movie adaptation… hmm… I can tell you a couple that were my LEAST favorites: Hearts in Atlantis was a horrible pale and senseless rendering of what I thought was a really good book, and I think it would have been impossible to take The Kite Runner, which so deeply lived in the mental realms, into a movie with any of it’s power left.

But… you want favorite… I think The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was fairly good and stayed close to the story (it did wander off the ranch in a spot or two… Caspian, on the other hand, was in another county, let alone “off the ranch”). I thought Atonement was a much better movie than book, as well as Nim’s Island.

I’d have to say, though, my FAVORITE is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton-style. Johnny Depp’s Wonka is the right mix of interesting yet weird with whom you’re uncertain of your safety, which is exactly how Dahl described Wonka.

I liked the Harry Potter movies, and thought they did well at getting in the major points of the books. I also like the most recent version of Matilda.

I absolutely loved A Walk to Remember, both the book AND the movie. Both of them made me cry!
And I can’t WAIT to see Coraline!

I know my chances are slim that I will win a copy of this book, but I would really love the opportunity.

Hmm, favorite book to movie adaptation…that’s a tough one…I think I will go with Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the adaptation with Keira Knightley in the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet. And Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy is just plain yummy.

Ian McEwan’s Atonement. I thought the film was an excellent adaptation of a great novel.
