The Twelve Days of Christmas Cookies – Day 4
In case you missed it, Julie, of Booking Mama, and I are hosting a virtual cookie swap. We’ll post twelve cookie recipes (six each, since we’re alternating days) and we want you to share a recipe on November 27. The recipe I’m featuring today is a Christmas tradition in our family. When Vance was younger and eager to help, he loved to make these with me. These cookies are fun because you can dye them different colors and decorate them with sprinkles.
Basic Spritz Cookies
1 cup shortening (for flavor, I use half butter)
¾ cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2¼ cup flour
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking powder
Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Fill cookie press and form cookies on ungreased cookie sheet. If you wish to add sprinkles, do it before baking. Bake at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes.
Julie shared her recipe for Sand Tarts yesterday. Make sure to check out Day 5 on her blog tomorrow.
I remember making these with my Mom and then later, with my own children. I think I like them more now than I did as a child but they were a lot of fun to make!
I love spritz cookies! The photo is just adorable!
Thanks for the recipe. I am going to try this ( I think mom would like to help ) 🙂 The pic is super cute
Oh – I have missed this wonderful post idea, but I will be sure to go back and read the previous 3 recipes! What a lovely idea
Very cute picture! I always felt jealous when I was young because our family didn’t have one of those spritz makers!
how lovely that you have a traditional family recipe that the children have enjoyed making over the years.
Thanks for the recipe Kathy…I am definitely going to try this one.
That is such a cute pic of Vance.
Sounds like a great recipe although I don’t own a cookie press, I guess its time I went and bought one LOL
Thanks Kathy
I love these cookies — I need to dig out my cookie press. Love the photo of Vance.
I don’t think I’ll ever had these. This is a recipe my kids and I will try.
Yummy. I love that cookies take so little time to bake.
Vance is a cutie!
I was looking forward to learning some new vocabulary words today! Instead, I get a cookie recipe. 🙂
What a great vintage photo! I bet you had fun together making the cookies every year.
I’ll bookmark your recipe; I have a cookie press in the pantry (not sure it’s ever been used!)
I love making spritz cookies with my son. I don’t think I have a picture and will have to take one this Christmas! The cookie press is a fun tool for kids to use. Great picture of Vance!
when my grandma moved in with my mom, I got her cookies press. I haven’t tried it yet, but this may be a good place to start.
Sounds delicious…love that photo!
Love, love, love the picture! He was such a darn cutie!
Not a cookie gun! ack! They never worked well for me or I didn’t have the patience to use them. He looks like he was having fun though.
These cookies look yummy! We make butter cookies each year with the cookie gun, but these would be a nice addition.
Thanks for another interesting recipe!
Such a sweet picture of little Vance! I’m really enjoying the cookie recipes, and I know exactly which one of mine I want to post on the 27th.
What a great photo! I love when you include the older pictures of Vance in your posts.
I am posting my favorite cookie recipe on the 27th! This is so fun and I have been watching the recipes you have been posting – YUM!
This is my kind of recipe – quick and easy and not too many ingredients. And what an adorable photo!
This is another recipe that looks easy and delicious. I am gathering these up for my baking week this holiday season, so thanks!
I’ve been missing these cookie recipes…what could I have been doing all this time.
I love to make spritz cookies, even if they are time consuming. My grandma’s the one who first made them in my family so I always think of her when I make them.
I love that you guys are doing this!!! I’m going to gain a lot of weight this holiday season and I plan on blaming it all on you and Julie!
Well, yeah. Of course Vance loved helping — he’s a boy and these cookies require the use of a real TOOL! Actually, I know boys like to cook, too, but I do think my nephew would be especially enthusiastic to use the cookie press! And he can never get enough sprinkles.
