Book and DVD giveaway: Louisa May Alcott

November 21, 2010

I’m thrilled to have a paperback copy of Little Women: The Woman Behind Little Women by Harriet Reisen, and a DVD of the American Masters episode made from the book to give away, thanks to the folks at Henry Holt/Picador.  I’m really excited about this book, and, as you can see, it’s getting rave reviews.  Here’s the publisher’s description:

In a fresh, modern take on the remarkable Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Reisen’s vivid biography explores the author’s life in the context of her works, many of which are to some extent autobiographical. Although Alcott secretly wrote pulp fiction, harbored radical abolitionist views, and served as a Civil War nurse, her novels went on to sell more copies than those of Herman Melville and Henry James. Stories and details culled from Alcott’s journals, together with revealing letters to family, friends, and publishers, plus recollections of her famous contemporaries provide the basis for this lively account of the author’s classic rags-to-riches tale. In Louisa May Alcott, the extraordinary woman behind the beloved American classic Little Women is revealed as never before.

Here’s the trailer from the American Masters episode:

You can enter to win LOUISA MAY ALCOTT: THE WOMAN BEHIND LITTLE WOMEN (both the book and the DVD) by filling out this entry form.  This contest is open to those with a US address only.  I will use random.org to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EST Sunday, December 5, 201o.   Winner will be announced on Monday, December 6, 2010.  Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

I’ll bet you are enjoying this one. I hope this is not a repeat comment of mine. Anyway, I love reading about Louisa May Alcott. I’ve read The Lost Summmer…. I hated for that one to end. I can tell you loved this one.

I’ve loved Little Women for as long as I can remember, reading everything Alcott I could get my hands on after that novel. Now I’m off to enter the contest, but even if I shouldn’t win, it’s a wonderful idea for one’s Christmas list. Thanks for sharing, Kathy!

I missed the PBS special but have been meaning to read the book for some time – perhaps will suggest it to my book group. We read American Bloomsbury, then visited Lousia and many of her acquaintances in the cemetary in Concord!
