Australia

australia-movie

My movie going friend and I ventured out in the rain to see Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.   Nicole Kidman plays Sarah Ashley, a British aristocrat who heads to Australia to sell her husband’s cattle ranch.  When the “king” of Australian cattle tries to take her land, the fighter in her comes out.  The manager of her ranch is corrupt so she fires him and, with the help of Drover (played by Hugh Jackman), decides to drive her cattle to the port to be sold.   Along the way, they encounter sabotage by the competition, prejudice against children who are of mixed race and, of course, love.  This movie is set at the beginning of World War II.

This movie is long, but very good.  (I was very proud of myself that I didn’t have to get up to go to the bathroom!) It has a great story and some of the scenery is beautiful.  The boy who plays Nullah is adorable.  It did make us both cry and we decided that we need to see a comedy next time.  My only complaint with the movie, is that they didn’t show enough of Hugh Jackman, if you know what I mean.

Haha, I know what you mean! I’m glad you liked it. I’ve been intending to see this film but the reviews are mixed. Thanks for the review. =)

My parents liked this one too. I hope we see it before it leaves our area.

Hi, This movie totally took me by surprise – I thought it was going to be too long, too overdone, etc., but my daughter and I were totally swept up in it.

That’s pretty much exactly what I thought of the movie. It reminded me a lot of Gone With The Wind. The one thing that I thought was goofy was the guy being eaten by an alligator, what was that!?

This movie totally took me by surprise. I thought it was going to be too long, too overdone, etc… My 12 yr old daughter and I were totally swept away for the entire 2 1/2 plus hours (and I was glad I didn’t have to go to the bathroom too!). I agree the croc chomp fest was a little over the top, but it still some how worked because those bad guys were SO bad and it didn’t show too much chomp. I mean does that really happen in Australia a lot? Between that and Crocodile Dundees, the aussies really need to watch that little piece of travel pr.

I saw this with my parents right after Thanksgiving, and enjoyed every minute of it. It was like three movies crammed into one long epic, but somehow it worked.

Although, even with “more” Hugh Jackman, there’s never enough Hugh Jackman. 🙂

Oh yes, I know what you mean! 🙂 My parents enjoyed this one, too. I saw “Yes Man” last weekend and “The Spirit” on Friday. Jim Carrey is always hilarious, but the “The Spirit” was pretty terrible. I let my boyfriend talk me into that one… never again! 😉

Ohhhh – I want to go see this one!! My husband and I were trying to figure out when we can get someone to watch our son so we can go. It looks wonderful! So glad you got to see it in the theater.

    🙂 Wendi

I’m hoping to see this one too. It just moved up the list thanks to your review! We saw Bedtime Stories on Christmas Day. All four of us liked it. I thought it was cute, my 8yr old boy thought it was GREAT! lol

  15. December 28, 2008 3:34 pm

LOL I have not seen this yet…we like to do epic movies at home. Which is good. I can freeze on Hugh once or twice. 🙂

    Merry Christmas!

I’m hoping to see this one as well! I missed it when my girlfriends went to see it a few weeks ago. Hugh Jackman is definitely worth looking at for 3 hours!! Thanks for sharing your review with us.

  18. December 28, 2008 5:15 pm

I really want to see this, but my husband isn’t so inclined. Because of the length, I may be better off waiting for the DVD to come out though. LOL I am glad you enjoyed it, Kathy!

Not enough Hugh Jackman?! Why waste such a great actor (and yes. I do think I know what you mean 🙂 )?

  20. December 29, 2008 4:10 am

Oh…I knew I wanted to see this movie when I saw a poster in a theatre where I went to see Madagaskar 2 (which I liked a lot) . I like anything with Nicole Kidman in it.

  21. December 29, 2008 9:12 pm

I can’t wait to see this one. 🙂 And yes, I really know what you mean.

I loved Nullah as well! And that scene where Jackman is pouring the water over his head…ohmygoodness. 🙂 It was a long movie, but I’d see it again.

To Margo: re the crocodiles in Australia (the country)… yes, they are a very real threat in the northern regions. I live in tropical North Queensland, and just tonight, my friend walked on a small beach in front of her house, and it was there on the beach… in front of her!! Very scary and they are very smart. If you walk at the same time every day, they notice your habit patterns. And they are very patient. They wait to get ‘you’. They are also a protected species. But, usually creeks where they are known to be, are marked as such.

I loved the movie Australia also!
