Review: Very Valentine

February 17, 2009

very-valentine1

Thirty-three year old Valentine Roncalli lives and works with her grandmother in Greenwich Village.  Valentine is an apprentice in her family’s custom made wedding shoe business, Angelini Shoes.  The company has been in business for years, but is on the brink of bankruptcy.  Valentine’s brother is a successful businessman and he thinks he knows all of the answers, even though he’s never worked in the shoe business.   When a movie being filmed nearby is desperate for shoes, Angelini Shoes provides them with a pair.  This leads to an invitation to compete for a place in Bergdorf Goodman’s Christmas window.

Valentine sees the Bergdorf competition as a chance to save the company.  She works on a design and travels to Italy with her grandmother to select the finest materials to make the shoes.  She discovers a wonderful secret about her grandmother and learns much about herself on the journey.

Along with trying to save the  shoe company, Valentine has to deal with two sisters, her parents, her brother and a new boyfriend.

Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani is the first book in a new trilogy.  No one can write about families the way Trigiani can.  She reveals the love, frustration and loyalty that all families share.  She is also a master at creating characters that you become emotionally involved with.  This book has wonderful descriptions of food, clothing and shoes.  It made me want to travel to Capri to buy a pair of custom made shoes.  This was not my favorite of Adriana Trigiani’s books (that would be Lucia, Lucia) but I thought it was very enjoyable and I look forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Here’s a video of Adriana Trigiani talking about the book:

Thanks for bringing this book to my attention. I’ve heard good things about this author, but haven’t read any of her books yet.

I know this is blasphemous living in VA, but I’ve never read any of her books. My sister has read her Big Stone Gap books and keeps asking me to. I really need to add her to my TBR.

Great review. I don’t think it was my favorite either, but I definitely liked it enough to continue with the series. I need to write this review today!

I’ve never read any of her books, I’ll have to see if my library carries any of them (because I’m still not done with my Ban on Spending!)… =)

Sounds wonderful. I wonder why they didn’t feature shoes on the cover? I’ve only read the first of the Big Stone Gap books.

As usual, I have a book or two of her’s that I have not read yet. But a great review and I loved her in that video.

I really like the Big Stone Gap books, but I haven’t read LUCIA, LUCIA. Guess I better put that on my list . . . along with this one!

Me again. I like Lucia, Lucia too.
Very Valentine had me with the first two sentences!

I’ve enjoyed Adriana Trigiani for years, and our book club had two separate chats with her over the years. I’ve not yet read Very Valentine but do have it on my ‘get list’.

Nice Review Kathy! I just reviewed Very Valentine on Valentine’s Day. I loved it. I wanted a pair of shoes from Capri as well!! I liked Lucia, Lucia as well but my favorite is Queen of the Big Time and The Big Stone Gap series.

What a wonderful review. That alone made me want to read the book but the interview with the author – wow – now I have to OWN the book. Thank you.

This sounds like a book that I would enjoy. The only book that I read by Trigiani was Queen of the Big Time and I really liked it. Thanks for the review!
