Love at First Sight: Kindle 2

April 18, 2009

On Monday, I was beyond thrilled when I watched that video and learned that I had won Glue Genie‘s Twitter contest for a Kindle 2.   I sent Carl a text (he didn’t believe me until he saw the video) and called everyone I knew.  Fellow book bloggers were so kind on Twitter that day with their congratulations.   Laura from Glue emailed me right away to let me know that she had ordered my Kindle 2 and that it should arrive on Thursday.  What a day I had on Thursday!  Every time I thought I heard a truck, I went running to look out the front door.  At one point, I thought I should just stand at the front door and wait, but decided against it, convincing myself that the exercise was good for me.  It was a long day, but UPS finally delivered my Kindle 2 sometime between 5:15 and 6:30 PM – the first time I left the house all day.  I had to be somewhere else at 7:00, so I hurriedly opened the box so it could be charging while I was gone.

kindle-out-of-the-boxThe picture to the left shows everything that was in the box!  The black folder is a quick start guide, since the user’s guide is on the Kindle!  The cord is both a power cord and a USB cord – I’ve never seen one like it before.  The Kindle is lightweight and thin and I found it easy to set up and navigate.  Downloading a book was a snap – it only took seconds.  In fact, it was almost too easy for someone addicted to books.  It was easy to download the 3 e-books I have on it too.

kindle-first-book-downloadedI haven’t had a lot of time to play with my new toy, but if my initial reaction is any indication, I think I’m going to love it.  I ordered a cover today so I can carry it with me.  I’ll do a full review after I’ve read my first book on it.  (The picture to the right shows the first book I bought for it.)

I’m glad you love it, Kathy! I would definitely worry that acquiring books would be too easy for me. Just a click is dangerous for us addicts. 😉

Can’t wait to see how reading on it goes!

I’m so happy for you Kathy. And I agree a click for a book is pretty tempting. But what a great machine for a book reader. Can’t wait for a fuller report.

Still torn on this. I’ve heard so many great things, but I love the feel of a book in my hands. Hmmm…

  10. April 18, 2009 7:58 am

I’m so happy that you won this!! It looks like you’re really going to enjoy this..I’m so jealous…I love real books, but this would be so much easier to carry than a bunch of books…but hey…why not real books and Kindle!!?? 🙂 Enjoy!

  32. April 18, 2009 7:23 pm

That is so awesome!! Congrats! You are so very deserving. What a terrific prize. I love “real” books too but I think this is a great addition for readers, especially when it’s free! It would be so handy for traveling and the perfect idea for students. My kids can’t carry all of their books now. Enjoy and tell us all about it after you’ve had the chance to play with it. 🙂
