Review: Love in Mid Air

March 29, 2010
tags: ,

When Elyse Bearden is on a flight home from Phoenix she meets a man that makes her question her life.  She comes to realize that she’s not happy and begins to wonder what she should do about it.  Should she give up so much of what she values – her home, her friends, her marriage – and take a chance, or should she stick with the safety of what she knows?

Love in Mid Air by Kim Wright is the story of Elyse’s struggle.  Much of the struggle is internal, but some of it is discussed with her friends as well – as a matter of fact, I was a little surprised at just how much she discussed with her friends.

I love Kim Wright’s writing and was caught up in Elyse’s story from the very beginning, even though I couldn’t relate to her at all.  I felt like she blamed her unhappiness on other people and couldn’t figure out what was so bad about her husband.  Having said that, I do think there are a lot of women who will be able to relate to Elyse and her discontent.  I just wonder how many would make the same decision she did.  Love in Mid Air made me think about what I value in life and how lucky I am.  It was worth reading for that alone.

I recently received this one. I’m excited to read it. I’ll be sure to check out the other blogs touring the book.

I like a novel that makes me realize what I have (a great husband/family/life).

This sounds like a great book Kathy; thanks for making me aware of it.

Sounds like a thought-provoking book! Have to look this up!

Interesting book, definitely worth a look.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. Love in Mid Air is a little bit of a wild ride – my poor mother is very worried about how she is going to explain the sex scenes to her garden club and has decided to go with “Kim watches too much CSI.” Still not sure exactly how that ties in, but the point is I tried to make this a realistic account of a divorce which means that Elyse isn’t always likeable and the story doesn’t have the fast, neat, classic “happy ending” where the heroine swaps one man for another and everything’s all wrapped up. In my experience, divorce (not to mention friendship, love, and sex) is way too complicated for that!

Kathy, I think you are right, based on my perception of the women around me in my day-to-day life, there is alot of discontent. Which I find very very sad. Sometimes I think there is discontent just because they need drama and exciting events to keep them afloat, and aren’t satisfied with the joys of the daily grind. I think they need to pick up a new hobby…like blogging!

I second what Mary said above – I like a book that makes me appreciate the guy I just sent out the door on his way to work. I’ve read several reviews now and they have convinced me that I need to pick this book up and take a gander at it. Thanks for the review, Kathy, and thanks for writing the book, Kim. It seems like a timely story and I do like the fact that the woman doesn’t immediately need to have another man in her life.

This book sounds really interesting. I seem to be stumbling upon so many books and movies about crumbling marriages lately, but this one does sound unique. Thanks!

I just read a review of this book over at Peeking Between the Pages before I landed up here. Sounds interesting, and I also liked the author’s guest post.

Sounds interesting. I like the idea of a book that’s so realistic, you can’t be sure what the outcome or ending will be.

I’m enjoying reading other bloggers thoughts on this book. Elyse can be an unlikeable character with the choices she makes although as you said, there will be many women who can relate to her.
There is definitely a lot to discuss with this book.

You hooked me with this yesterday, babe. Although… is it me or are divorce novels hot right now? I just saw the new Louise Erdrich book is about divorce, and I’m reading Searching for Tina Turner, which is about divorce…

That better not be an omen! I like the Tour Manager!

I think that first paragraph says so succinctly what the author stated she wanted to accomplish by writing this. And that question really is the crux of the problem for so many women. Great review!

  15. March 29, 2010 1:12 pm

Excellent review, Kathy. This sounds like a great book for women.

  16. March 29, 2010 1:49 pm

Great review, Kathy! I have not seen this author nor this title before. It sounds like an interesting story.

I’ve been in the mood for some smart, savvy women’s fiction–this seems like a good candidate. Thanks! Great review, as usual.

Although I feel very fortunate with my own life, I know there are many people who are not happy with theirs. If this book helps people evaluate their lives and take responsibility for it, that’s a good thing. Reason enough to read the book.

  19. March 29, 2010 3:56 pm

It sounds like this book was a bit of a contentious read for you. I think I might feel the same, as I am pretty happy in my domestic situation. I am glad that you were still able to connect with the story and enjoy it anyway!

  20. March 29, 2010 4:45 pm

I knew our reviews would be similar — stay tuned for tomorrow. The author was a very good writer!

  21. March 29, 2010 4:46 pm

I have too many women friends who complain about their lives and are having mid-life crises so I might not have much patience with the characters in this book!

  22. March 29, 2010 6:07 pm

You have me curious about this one. 🙂

  23. March 29, 2010 6:52 pm

You know I could relate to Elyse in her feelings, not her actions. I guess in that way I connected more than you did. Great review Kathy.

  24. March 29, 2010 7:48 pm

Thanks for your comments, guys! I appreciate each and every one!

While it doesn’t sound like one I’ll go out and grab, I do like that she’s trying to give a different version of divorce. I read her guest post too and thought she made some good points. I’m not one to share much with friends personally but some women I know tell way too much.

This sounds like an interesting spin! And I love that title! Great review!

Hi Kathy, I’ve just read another review from Darlene’s blog and to me, it’s a story that’s close to home. I understand how this story will affect people differently.

It depends on the situation you’re currently in. If you’re domestically happy and contented, you’ll see the character as being unthankful and whatever else the others have said here. But still, it doesn’t harm anyone to read and see things from Elyse’s perspective.

If you’re facing the situation that Elyse is facing, then you’ll see her point.

This is definitely a book that I’d read. I’ve placed an order for Kindle edition, which will be released on early April. Thanks for the review!

  29. March 30, 2010 10:20 am

Now I want to know what she decides! Sounds like a good one. If you don’t identify with the character, at least it makes you think about the good things in your life.

  30. March 30, 2010 12:36 pm

I’m curious to read this book now just to see what she decides to do. Plus, to see whether I like th character.

I can certainly relate to the disontent because I’ve been experiencing some of that in my own life. I can’t say there’s anyone to blame for my choices other than myself, though.

    Thanks for the review!

Not sure this one is for me, but it does sound empowering for Elyse.

  32. March 30, 2010 9:06 pm

Nice review Kathy. I can’t seem to completely relate to the character at this point in my life..but perhaps some other times in my life I can relate to it and I know many women in this situation. Seems like so many do so many of the same things….and some just stay unhappy.

  33. March 31, 2010 1:49 am

I just been thinking the same thing since i read the reviews of this one – just how many women in a similar situation will go ahead and make a move of this kind.
And yes, it always helps to find out the issues before trying to blame others for it.

I liked your review, but i m not sure I will like it 🙂

I’m really curious to read this book! It sounds good and though provoking and very real to me.

Sounds like a book that makes you look at your own life. That’s always a good thing…reassessment.

    Happy National Poetry Month!
